Hi, my name is Gloria, and teaching has been my calling for as long as I can remember. I entered the field right after college and have worked as an elementary school teacher for over 10 years, with more than 20 years in education overall. I hold a California Multiple Subject Credential, which authorizes me to teach all subjects to students in grades K-8, along with a Bilingual Authorization Credential in Spanish. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Literature from UC Santa Cruz and my Master's of Education from Harvard University. I've also completed the Special Education Academy through the Association of California School Administrators, giving me a solid understanding of how special education programming works in California, and I regularly take part in professional development through my work with school districts.
In addition to my classroom teaching, I've tutored small groups and individual students, both in person and online. When I start with a new student, my first step is always to understand their strengths and areas of need. Sometimes that means reviewing assessments already administered by their school, and other times I'll administer my own. From there, I work with the student and their family to set clear, achievable goals, and we build toward them methodically, adjusting along the way as the student grows.
My specialties are reading and literacy, as well as English as a second language. Most of my direct classroom and tutoring experience has been with K-8 students, but I also spent 5 years overseeing an adult ESL program, which gave me deep insight into the specific challenges adult language learners face and how instruction needs to be structured differently for them. That experience left me with a real interest in working directly with adult ESL students, and I welcome the opportunity to bring my background in literacy and language instruction to support learners at any stage of life.
