Hello! I'm Ligia (pronounced LEE-hee-uh) or LV. I have over a decade of informal tutoring experience, which sprouted from my early love of teaching and learning. At CSUN, I majored in English - Creative Writing with a minor in Visual Arts, and I obtained my BA with honors and a summa cum laude GPA. During my last 2 years at CSUN, I worked at CSUN's LRC's Writing Lab, where I helped college students one-on-one and in small groups to refine their reading, writing and studying skills. In addition to tutoring, I am an aspiring novelist and fine artist. I have two creative works (a short story and an after-poem) and a literary essay published in local and national magazines. Plus, a mixed media canvas of mine has been accepted for publication, and I recently completed a mural commissioned by a local Trader Joe's.

To make the most of my tutoring services, I kindly ask for students to have their assignment and instructor's directions (if applicable) on hand, since these provide me with important background context. After getting acquainted with the student and their given task, I then ask what their concerns or struggles may be and create a custom agenda for the session. Whether it's starting a big project, touching up an almost finished one, or anything in between, I'm happy to help! También hablo español.

I strive to provide educational guidance with patience and a smile. My tutoring style involves open-ended questions, consistent check-ins, and an enthusiastic growth mindset. Feel free to contact me to work together; I look forward to being a part of your learning journey!

From grammar basics to pacing strategies, I strive to help decrease the intimidating nature of the ACT and replace it with newfound confidence! For this section of the ACT, I encourage students to analyze the given texts like an editor and test out the answer options to identify the best fit. Art History

Art History

Minoring in art allowed me to come in contact with art history essentials! I am most familiar with the following Europe-based and Western-influenced periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, avant-garde, modernism, and post-modernism. I am also comfortable discussing the general history of photography, cinema and television in relation to art. My personal favorite part of art history is interpreting different pieces from both historical and contemporary lenses!

Obtaining my BA in Creative Writing opened a world of possibilities in general writing, storytelling and self expression! My early love for art motivated me to continue refining my creative ways of expression while in college - including drawing! I am comfortable providing guidance with graphite and charcoal utensils, and my art know-how covers drawing basics (line use, shading and blending, linear perspective, sketching, etc.) and 3D realism (human proportions and anatomy, still life/objects, portraiture, drapery/texture, etc.). From gesture drawing to abstract symbolism, I enjoy helping students broaden their creative horizons!
English

English

To me, "English" is an umbrella term that includes writing, proofreading, reading and expressing ourselves in that language. Aside from the aforementioned aspects, my expertise also covers language arts, phonics and the occasional linguistic comparison between English and other Latin-derived languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, etc.). Please check out my commentary on my other tutoring subjects for more detailed descriptions of what I can teach!

Essay Writing

Majoring in English helped me better appreciate the thoughtfulness of a good essay - and how to properly execute it! From literary analyses to persuasive arguments, I teach the ins and outs of a strong essay structure and highly recommend students to support their claims with reliable evidence. Essay writing is like cooking: with the best ingredients and techniques, the final product will be outstanding!
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

Fiction is a creative reflection of the real world, and the more creative the writing is, the better! Most of my published pieces are works of fiction, and I enjoy sharing what I've learned with fellow creative writers. Whether your goal is to get a good grade or tell a one-of-a-kind story, I look forward to helping you play with story structure, tone, word choice and more so your final product is something you're proud of!

Literature

Literature

My passion for reading and my BA in English have enabled me to take on and welcome multiple interpretations of literary works! Like my approach with reading, my question-based approach encourages students to dissect the text's main ideas and hidden messages, and we then consider how these elements connect to our world. I also enjoy applying different critical theories and thinking outside the box, especially with the classics!
Painting

Painting

My minor in Visual Arts enabled me to broaden my painting horizons! I am comfortable teaching basic painting techniques with acrylic, and I love exploring what can be done with oil paint with students who like a good creative challenge. From monochromatic still lives and portraiture to colorful abstract symbolism, I look forward to sharing that feeling of accomplishment with students who can't wait to unleash their inner creativity!
Phonics

This connection between spelling, context and phonics enable students to further develop their reading confidence and set the grounds for their unique writing styles!
Proofreading

Proofreading

Like my approach with grammar, my proofreading style is very thorough and precise. Aside from pointing out the occasional typo, I strive to provide options within the standard English writing guidelines, such as when it's best to use a comma, semicolon, or period. Full disclosure: I often include big-picture writing suggestions about the work-in-progress along with the proofreading tips!
Reading

Reading

Having obtained my BA in English - Creative Writing, I am able to provide guidance with both the writing/creation and reading/deconstruction of written works. My question-focused teaching approach walks students through the process of identifying main ideas, significant details, mood and tone, symbols, and more, and we then analyze how these components come and work together in the text. If you want to enjoy reading and analyzing what's being read, you've come to the right place!

I am able to switch between English and Spanish with ease, which allows me to adapt to the student's needs. I specialize in reading, writing and speaking formal/professional Spanish. Regarding written Spanish, I enjoy guiding students to identify when an accent or tilde should be placed in select word writing and enunciation, and I encourage students to create useful verb tense conjugation charts to better distinguish said tenses.

Study Skills

Study Skills

Juggling coursework and life is a struggle, but a custom game plan goes a long way! I love sharing my tried-and-true study tips with students, from keeping an agenda to exercising discipline and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Dialogue is key with these sessions to ensure we come up with a realistic and effective plan that is as unique as the student.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Being an avid reader and studying English for 4 years expanded my vocabulary, and learning how to use new words is fascinating! When tutoring vocabulary, I like to go past the dictionary definition by analyzing the word's origin and the context in which the word is being used. Having an expansive vocab also makes other aspects of English less intimidating over time, such as identifying a word's potential meaning in a text and developing one's personal writing style.

Knowledgeable & Organized

Ligia has met with my teen son several times now for help with Spanish. She is well organized and asks what he has been learning in school before his tutoring session. Its easy to communicate and schedule sessions with her. She responds in a timely manner. We will continue seeing her next school year.
