My name is Jy (rhymes with "pie"). It is the first micro-lesson in etymology—the champion of good writing—for my students. I am a firm believer in the Chinese proverb, "You give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; you teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime." I practice it in my tutoring by providing tools for students to develop their skills, apply new techniques, and build good writing.

Whether the assignment is essay-writing, analytical reading, expanding vocabulary, or understanding grammar and sentence structure, my fundamental goal is to create success in English and writing classes. My tutoring sessions are designed to suit the particular needs of each unique student and meet their individual goals.

I have worked with all elementary school levels to develop analytical and interpretive reading and writing skills. Additionally, I worked individually with students on English test preparation and college application essays, helping them earn admittance into their top choice of schools (e.g., UCLA, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Penn State, University of Toronto). I have also guided graduate students in editing manuscripts and research papers.

As a tutor, I want my clients to know that I understand the stress of managing homework, sports, extracurricular activities, and social life. I do not want to add to their workload. Rather, let us make the homework process efficient by improving English language skills, which will boost course grades and improve confidence.

Additionally, I graduated Cum Laude from Los Angeles Valley College with an Associate's Degree in English and Spanish. My favorite aspect of English is etymology and grammar. I have helped students, ages middle school through adulthood, hone their comprehension of grammar and punctuation for use to their advantage in academic, professional, and creative writing.

I have worked with many students, ages middle school through graduate school, to improve their literature interpretation and analytical skills. For example, some students need tutoring to break down Old English poetry and prose and then write about it in essay form. During this process, we work on the learning and application of new analytical skills.

From college application essays to poetry and prose, I have worked with many students on the art of redrafting and redaction with impressive results on their part. As a UCLA alum with my BA in English and concentration in Creative Writing, I have honed the critical skills of editing and proofreading.

I have taught children as young as age four to learn how to read. Engaging them in interactive reading projects, I foster a love of reading in children ages pre-school through high school. This is an important goal: strong readers are strong students. A UCLA alumnus, I majored in English with a focus on Creative Writing. Through the analysis of both complex and rudimentary texts, I tutor students (middle school through college; ESL) to improve their reading comprehension.
