Professors are often the worst teachers. While brilliant, most professors teach on a Ph.D. level, not on a layman level. Often information is presented in an illogical order, without the shortcuts they used to become awesome in their field, and in a manner so boring that even their mothers would cry. So where does that leave you? Woefully confused, anxious because you’re falling behind, AND cosmically bored. Yikes!

That’s where I come in. Unlike your professor, I’m a huge believer in...

Unlike your professor, I’m a huge believer in “tricks” and “shortcuts.” THEY WORK LIKE MAGIC IF YOU KNOW HOW AND WHEN TO USE THEM!!! Of course, they aren’t everything and don’t always apply, but you better believe I’ll show you every single trick and shortcut I know to cut down the time it takes for you to learn the material. I’m in the business of helping you earn the maximum points on your assignments and tests, because that is what truly matters in your quest to attend med-school, pass your class, or simply get that A in the bag. I work to keep your attention and confidence high during sessions so that you can crush it on your own.

How I work:

•We honestly assess where you are in the class- judgment-free.

•I determine quickly the best course of action to get you caught up with the class.

•We find the simplest way to look at the information based on your strengths, show you any shortcuts and tricks that apply, and then practice the heck out of it.

•We send you home with extra practice problems so that you can continue practicing the heck out of it until you feel great about what you’re doing.

•We create a study plan at the end of each session for how to spend your time wisely outside of sessions, and customize your study tools based on your strengths and how your mind works.

That’s it. You deserve the easiest route into the material so that you can make the best use of your time and not spend your entire life on studying O Chem.

Chemistry

Chemistry requires lots of shortcuts and practice to do well. Easily on of the most poorly-taught classes in the country (I was one of the lucky ones), teachers often hide the shortcuts and tricks that help you achieve success and proficiency quickly. They drown you in useless details and confusing jargon, making it difficult to know where and how to start. I reverse the typical teaching method by starting you off simply- showing you the tricks first, building you up so that you can then consistently get the right answer, and then later do the heavy lifting on your own. To do this, I draw from the practice problems that will most simulate what you’ll encounter on your exams and help you prove that you can get the right answer on your own with the most basic level of knowledge. I help ground learning in terms of concepts that make sense to you, not your professor, so that what you cover A. Makes perfect sense to you B. Is something you can easily remember and C. Is much more fun and relatable than what is covered in class. Chemistry (and it’s roided-up cousin Organic Chemistry) is one of my specialties. I started tutoring students in Chemistry the semester after I finished the course in 2007. I graduated with only a Minor in Chemistry from Southwestern University, but was the top Chemistry student at the school during my four years there. I have tutored General Chemistry for nine years and counting, and can help you in any realm- College-Level, AP Chem, IB Chem, SAT Chem- you name it.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Succeeding in Organic Chemistry is similar to training for a marathon. Unfortunately, it is THE weed-out course for Pre-med programs, and is often mythologized by Pre-Med students to be THE literal bane of their existences. I’m here to tell you that you CAN do it, just like you can train for and run a marathon if you put your mind to it. I was trained in the most brutal Organic Chemistry class setting you can imagine. 80% of my classmates either dropped or failed the class by the end of the first semester. I spent the summer before the class teaching myself the material, and used an incredible resource I still recommend for all my students today (more on that later). After earning an A+ in both semesters, I started tutoring students the following semester and started the process of refining the tricks and shortcuts I used to succeed along with my students. So, back to the marathon analogy- you wouldn’t show up to the day of the race after spending weeks binge-watching House of Cards and eating delicious Cheetos, right? You’d have fun leading up to the race, but you’d probably literally die on mile 6 if you were lucky. Most students start studying the material a few days before the exam after semi-understanding the lecture, expecting to do great. However, the first semester of Organic Chem has 26.2 miles worth of info, and you need to be out running (studying and practicing problems) well in advance of the big race (each exam) to succeed. View me as your trainer. I’ll make sure you eat the right foods and cut out the bad ones. That means introducing you to the Holy Grail of learning Organic Chemistry- the magical workbook “Organic Chemistry as a Second Language” by David R. Klein- and having you avoid the textbook like the plague until you understand the basics and can process the expert-level information the textbook contains. Then I’ll create a training regimen filled with extra practice and detailed study plans so that you make gains outside of our sessions, especially leading up to each test. I’m here to help

I wouldn't be headed to med school without Joe!

I have had the pleasure of being tutored by Joe in Biochemistry and cannot sing his praises enough. I highly recommend him to anyone considering being tutored! He is the most patient, reliable, positive, flexible, knowledgeable, supportive, and relatable tutor I’ve ever worked with. It is quite obvious that he genuinely cares and has a passion for helping students understand the material and ultimately become successful in their class. After each tutor session with him, I felt so empowered as if I had just mastered the material and could go teach someone else what I just learned. His tutoring style actually made me excited to do my homework and take my tests. I know that probably sounds crazy because who the heck gets excited to do Biochemistry homework and take tests?! He is extremely adaptable and has many different techniques to help all styles of learning (even via Skype which I admit I was hesitant about initially). Joe is very discerning and intuitive, and he recognized when I was experiencing brain overload and made me feel comfortable about taking much needed breaks. He also recognized when/how to push me when I needed a little boost, encouragement, and accountability. I personally have battled with a long history of extreme test anxiety but he made me feel more confident than I’ve ever felt going into my exams. What a major life hurdle he helped me overcome and I am so grateful! I’ve had other tutors in the past who were certainly knowledgeable about the subject matter (and also confused the heck out of me!), but being knowledgeable about a subject and knowing how to teach it and make it relatable to others are two completely separate things. Joe truly has a gift and is worth every penny (and then some!). Consider yourself to be lucky if you work with Joe. If you’re on the fence, as I was, about hiring a tutor I hope this review has helped with your decision. You will certainly be glad that you’ve made this positive investment in yourself and your future!

Best Tutor I've ever had....ever, any subject!

Hired Joe for college level organic chemistry tutoring. Organic chemistry is probably one of the hardest subjects to understand. It is the subject that consistently ends premed bound student's efforts to become physicians. My pre-med college son asked me to locate an organic tutor for him. We selected Joe because of his great online reviews. My son has had lots of different tutors for his AP courses in high school and for college calculus, chemistry and physics. He describes Joe as "the best tutor I have ever had in my life." Joe makes organic chemistry easy to understand, he gives positive feedback and provides extra practice problems for improvement. Yes, his rates are very expensive but you have to look at it as an investment in the future. If you see it that way, it's worth it to skip your weekend dinner outing to pay for this tutor. Honestly, hate to write this review because it's already so difficult to get an appointment with him but just can help but let everyone know how great this guy is. Because of Joe, when my son has study sessions with his organic study group, he is the leader of the group and teaches the other students how to do the problems which reinforces his understanding of the material. Book early... Joe's always full.

So very helpful

In the words of my son, I feel more confident, Joe is so helpful. My son is taking organic chemistry this semester and likes to tutor with Joe every week. That is saying a lot for a 19-year-old to request this tutor! Highly recommend!!

Best Organic Chemistry Tutor!

Joe was an excellent tutor and helped me tremendously in organic chemistry II. He broke things down in a way that made more sense and gave little tricks to help recognize reactions. I would have been so lost without him! If you have any sort of problems with organic chemistry, he can fix it. During sessions we would figure out what I was having issues with and then he would create practice problems specifically designed to increase my ability and confidence in solving them. He was very flexible with hours and made sessions worthwhile. I learned more from him than I did in class! He knows his stuff and you can tell he really cares about his students. He has been the best tutor I have ever had!

"The Best Organic Chemistry Tutor" is NOT an Exaggeration!

As someone who has always struggled when it comes to STEM subjects no matter how much I study and use tutors, Joe was the first Organic Chemistry tutor I've had who was able to identify the missing parts of my foundational understanding and give me tools on how to fix them--and that was just during the first session. As I've continued to work with Joe as my tutor, he has been extremely consistent in being patient, creative when it comes to explaining concepts, and unbelievably knowledgable in his field(s) with a bag of "tricks" and mnemonic devices that give any Orgo Professor a run for their money. In cases where I was still lost after an initial explanation, Joe had no problem teaching a concept again in different ways until I finally understood because as much as the 'tricks' are great for short-answer questions and Elementary-level understanding, he also sees the importance in truly mastering general concepts in way a that makes sense to you as an individual, but is also what a Professor would be looking for as an exam answer. And, in addition to all that, he is an amazingly funny and kind-hearted person to boot!! He is the first person I've had that I am honestly a little saddened by knowing I'll no longer have the privilege of having him as my tutor once I complete Orgo II. If you're still on the fence, know that he is more than worth the price. Please take it from someone like me; for years I had been someone who dreaded STEM courses and would spend nights praying simply to pass, but after only a few sessions with Joe, I have been able to finally understand concepts, I am doing exponentially better on exams, and I'm even confident enough to teach some concepts to my friends. Thank you for everything, Joe!!

Our first encounter with Joe!!

Joe had his work cut out for him when he had to begin working with our son who is struggling with HS Algebra Part A & Part B (2 years) and has since his freshman year. He did not want to have a tutor and was reluctant to the idea. I let Joe know that he was going to be met with resilience. During their first session, I observed my son actually looking engaged and happy. After they ended I asked what he thought and he said Joe was cool and explained things to him in a way he "got it". Thanks for making Algebra fun!

The absolute BEST organic chemistry tutor!

I began working with Joe the summer before I took organic chemistry at my university. I'd heard from just about every student in my major (PharmD.) that this class was extremely difficult and had a high failure rate. Needless to say I was pretty overwhelmed however after just my first session I felt a thousand times better. We immediately established a plan for how to get ahead in the course; by the time I attended my first lecture I already felt confident with several chapters. I continued working with Joe over Skype for the next year. I never once felt that the online aspect of our sessions inhibited my understanding (in fact they proved to be more helpful than the face to face tutoring offered by my university). Between the resources Joe introduced me to (such as "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and his ability to clearly and consciously present the information, I was able to succeed far beyond my initial expectations. I firmly believe that if it weren't for Joe I would have never passed either organic chemistry I or II. I sincerely can't recommend him enough.
