My name is Eden. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in biology. I have a M.Sc from Cal Poly Pomona; my research was immunology and virology focused. I recently graduated with my Ph.D. in Immunology and Infectious Diseases.
My strong points are the sciences, math, French, and English subject areas. If you want a dedicated, passionate, experienced, knowledgeable, and fun tutor who makes learning easy, then I'm the tutor for you!
Sometimes, sitting in a classroom and having a teacher talk to you isn't enough to help you learn and master something. When I went to UC Santa Cruz, my friends and I were always helping each other and studying in groups. That's when I realized I really like helping others learn and I'm good at it.
I am an extremely patient person, and I know that sometimes, you need someone to explain something to you a million times before you can get it.
I love to tutor and for me, it's all about that moment, that light bulb moment, when a student really understands something that I've explained to them. I have experience tutoring all grade levels and my students would tell you that I am the best!
I have tutored elementary children in math, reading, reading comprehension, and writing. Younger children are my specialty. I help them get excited about learning.
I have also tutored middle and high school students in Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Honors Algebra 1 and 2, Literature, French, Chemistry, and Biology. I also tutor in the SAT and ACT subject areas and can help your child prepare for these tests.
I have experience in tutoring college subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, College Algebra, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, Organic Chemistry, the GRE Math section, and the CBEST.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored in pre-algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2. I have been taking math classes since high school and constant exposure has made it my easiest subject to teach. I have successfully tutored middle school and high school students for 4 years in mathematics.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 and Honors Algebra 2 for three years. Algebra 2 is an important fundamental to most forms of higher mathematics and is essential for the SAT. College Algebra is also within the scope of Algebra 2; many of the concepts of Algebra 2 are covered again in College Algebra. Algebra 2 covers linear equations, inequalities, graphing with variables (quadratic functions, cubic functions, etc), intro statistics, systems of equations, logs and exponents, conics, and matrices. I have extensive experience in mathematics and extra problems/tests that will benefit any student.
Biology

Biology

I have been studying biology since high school and taken it every year since 2005. I love the sciences and biology has always been my favorite subject. I majored in molecular biology at UC Santa Cruz (BA), biomedical sciences at California State Polytechnic University (MSc), and Immunology and Infectious Disease at Vanderbilt University (PhD). Tutoring in biology is like breathing for me: effortless.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Current chemistry studies usually consist of converting units, basic elemental trends, elemental characteristics, bonding, grams <-> moles, acids and bases, mol vs. M, stoichiometry, naming compounds, titrations, determining unknown concentrations, volumes, empirical formulas, molecular formulas, kinetics, thermodynamics, and other characteristics from gathered data. There is also a fair amount of math involved in studying chemistry and a specific way to do this math (diagramming). In order to major in biology, you must also take chemistry. I took it in high school and did very well. I also took it for a full year at UC Santa Cruz. I have notes, worksheets, extra practice problems, as well as 2 textbooks for reference.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring K-6 students. I tutor a group of students in this range at my current job. I also passed the Elementary Science & Math tests, the Literature, Proofreading, Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Writing tests provided by WyzAnt.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have passed all algebra tests by WyzAnt and I have previous experience in tutoring elementary children in math.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

Elementary science is fun science!! You get to learn about ecosystems, weather, photosynthesis, early physics principles, and how things work (without the hard work and stress required in high school). I have tutored six K-6 students in this subject and they always got very excited when it was time to learn science.
English

English

English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature classes were always my easiest classes, even when I started taking AP classes. I have always loved to read and I hope that I can pass on that love of reading to my students. I have read many books three or four times and still find joy in the stories. I have written many papers and reports, so grammar, spelling, and proofreading tools were expertly developed over time. Vocabulary has also developed over time with the passion I have for reading. I've read everything from fiction to fantasy, Russian, Italian, and French Literature to classics.
French

French

Bonjour! Languages are a passion of mine. I can speak, read, and write French. I took French all throughout high school and still have a solid grasp of the language. I have my own text books and workbooks and I create my own quizzes/tests so that you (or your child) will have a solid grasp of the language. I have been tutoring in French for 4 years and I currently tutor 2 high school students.
Geometry

Geometry

I have been tutoring in geometry for two years. Geometry is all about shapes (circles, squares, triangles, spheres, cylinders, cones) parallel and perpendicular lines, and the angles within these shapes. The formulas, shapes, and concepts for geometry will be used in later years and on the SAT so learning them right the first time is paramount. If you are an adult learner, geometry in college is very similar: the rules and concepts haven't changed; the theorems and formulas are still the same for high school as well as college students. I can help you get through this! I create quizzes and assign extra problems so that you can excel.
Grammar

Grammar

Proper grammar and syntax are the basic fundamentals to correct speaking and writing skills. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature classes were always my easiest classes, even when I started taking AP classes. I have written many papers and reports, so grammar, spelling, and proofreading tools were expertly developed over time. I also constantly correct friends and people I know when they speak or when they write me e-mails.
Literature

Literature

I have always loved to read and I hope that I can pass on that love of reading to my students. I have read many books three or four times and still find joy in the stories. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature were always my easiest subjects, even when I started taking AP classes. I've read everything from fiction to fantasy, Russian, Italian, and French Literature, as well as many of the classics.
Microbiology

Microbiology

Microbiology is my passion. Molecular pathogenesis and infectious diseases are my areas of graduate study. I took my lecture and practical laboratory classes and did very well. I discovered that bacteria and viruses are the things I want to spend my life studying. I am confident that I could answer any question relating to this subject.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is a key component to reading and writing. I currently tutor Kindergarten and first graders in reading and writing. Learning the sounds of letters and forming them into words also requires patience and I am an extremely patient person. I have also passed the WyzAnt Reading, Vocabulary, Spelling, and Writing tests.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have previously tutored a middle school student in pre-algebra and she found my tutoring extremely helpful. I did very well on the WyzAnt tests and I have study books available just in case. I have been taking math classes since high school and constant exposure has made it my easiest subject to teach.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have written many papers and reports, so proofreading tools were expertly developed over time. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature were always my easiest subjects, even when I started taking AP classes. Submitted work is a reflection of your capabilities and understanding of a certain subject. Incorrect grammar, spelling, and/or sentence structure can take a great essay or report to a F. Proofreading is an extremely important last step.
PSAT

PSAT

I have been tutoring in advanced mathematics, composition, and the SAT for two years. The PSAT is a gauge. It is a guide to help determine how well you'll do on the SAT and if you do well, you may receive financial aid in college. The PSAT is just like the SAT: it is designed to see how well you can take a test. Can you eliminate the wrong answers? Can you see the short cuts and know when to skip entire questions? I know how to do these things and I can teach them to you!
Reading

Reading

Reading is not only important in the form of a book, but is essential in all forms of life. Reading a college acceptance letter, reading instructions on a test, or simply reading a birthday card are triumphs that start with learning how to read. As a child, reading was one of my favorite things to do.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been tutoring in advanced mathematics and SAT Math for four years. The SAT is not like a normal test. The SAT is designed to see how well you can take a test. Can you eliminate the wrong answers? Can you see the short cuts and know when to skip entire questions? I know how to do these things and I can teach them to you!
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

The SAT Reading portion of the exam can be a little tricky for students. If you aren't a speedy or excellent reader AND understand what you have read, then this portion can be the downfall in your score. The keys to the SAT Reading portion are grammar understanding, an expansive vocabulary, and skimming (NOT reading) longer passages. I can help you master these and other techniques to help you succeed on the SAT Reading portion.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The Writing section is only 25 minutes! You cannot write a thoughtful, developed, masterpiece...and you aren't supposed to!! You must have a clear and concise position, support it in an organized manner, and not deviate from your position. The most important tool to accomplish this is the outline. Even if you've never used them, this is the one time you HAVE to. 5 paragraphs and 3 pages is what you know. The readers of the SAT do not want this. I can help you deliver a great SAT essay.
Spelling

Spelling

I have written many essays and reports, so proper spelling was expertly developed over time. My spelling has also developed over time with the passion I have for reading. Constant exposure to new words and how they are spelled is key to developing your own personal dictionary. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature were always my easiest subjects, even when I started taking AP classes.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have written many essays and reports, so introduction, as well as proper use of words has been expertly developed over time. My vocabulary has also developed over time with the passion I have for reading. Constant exposure to new words and how they are used is key to developing your own personal dictionary. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature were always my easiest subjects, even when I started taking AP classes.
Writing

Writing

Writing is the most important form of communication, second only to speech. I have written many essays and reports, so carefully putting my thoughts into words has been expertly developed over time. English, literature, writing, spelling, grammar, proofreading, reading, and vocabulary have always been my strong points. English and Literature were always my easiest subjects, even when I started taking AP classes.

The best tutor that I have ever had!

I honestly have no idea what I would have done without Eden. I had emailed her one day over the summer, and she instantly responded. She helped me with SAT math, and I jumped a good 200 points from my previous score. Just in math! Eden really connects with who she tutors, and makes learning so much easier. I am in no way near a math wizard, but I now feel like I can conquer any math test that is thrown my way because of Eden. She is patient, kind, hard working, very easy to communicate with, and takes her work seriously. If you're looking for a tutor in any subject, Eden is the perfect fit. Although I only had Eden for a few months, I know if I have any questions, I can always email her and she'll try to help in any way possible. Eden is completely amazing, and the best tutor that I have ever had.

Eden helped me in Algebra 2 intro to Stats. She was able to give me links to look at to find definitions and websites to look up how to do specific problems that I didn't understand. She is my go to math tutor.
