About Ian

Hi there!

A teacher and educator with over 15 years of experience, I come from a family of teachers. I have worked with thousands of elementary, secondary and university students to help them achieve their academic goals. I started teaching privately after 2 years of teaching SAT Test Preparation and GMAT Test Preparation classes for a well-known test prep company, where I recognized a pocket of opportunity for individual and small group work. Since then I have enjoyed mentoring students and helping them realize their academic and extracurricular goals.

My focus is on test prep, academic tutoring and study skills development. I regularly teach Chemistry/AP Chemistry, GMAT Prep, SAT and ACT Prep in the Math, English, and Writing Sections, all levels of Spanish, SSAT, ISEE, CBEST, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Essay Writing. There may be a subject or two I am forgetting here, so if you don't see it feel free to ask!

I enjoy making the most of every session, ensuring that my students leave feeling they have gleaned a ton of value from the experience. My clients can get in touch with me very quickly via text to schedule a session or discuss something we are working on remotely together. Having initially worked for larger tutoring companies and later run my own for over 14 years, I have a deep understanding of client needs and goals. I make my sessions feel purposeful and fulfilling, yet comfortable, fun, and interesting!

It is my experience that too often people view tutoring as something that is just for those who don't "get it" or aren't smart enough. This couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that in today's society, education is not prioritized as much as it was in the past. Large class sizes in many institutions means less individual attention and a lack of personalized learning. My mission in tutoring is to help my students have a deep, holistic understanding of the material, to close the competitive gap, and to help them learn in their own unique way. It is my belief then that tutoring can help students who are falling behind to get back on top and assist even the best and brightest students in maintaining a competitive edge in an ultra-competitive world.

I look forward to helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST, missing only 1 question on the entire exam! I have been teaching test prep and tutoring for more than 12 years and this is exam is no problem for me to teach. I used to work for a well-known test prep company teaching the GMAT, SAT, and ACT, so I feel I am more than qualified to teach the CBEST.

Chemistry

After taking AP chemistry in high school and getting all A's, I went on to study it at UCLA, where I received my BA with a minor degree in chemistry. For the last 12 years, I have actively tutored chemistry at the high school and college level.

Geometry

I have been teaching and tutoring geometry for over 15 years with great success.

GMAT

I scored in the top percentile on the GMAT and attended USC Marshall business school as a result. Check out my Wyzant testimonials to see how my GMAT students have done!

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for 25 years and have taught all levels privately. I have been in multiple bands, have played venues all over CA and the US. I studied ethnomusicology at UCLA and am have studied privately with MIT (Musician's Institute) graduates. I am also am endorsed by several guitar companies.

ISEE

I have been teaching the ISEE for over eight years. I am intimately familiar with the format of test and most of the books available on the subject. All of my students have had amazing success on the ISEE and have been accepted to the private high schools of their choice.

Series 7

When I am not tutoring, I spend my time trading futures and stocks. I have had my series 7, 63, 3, and insurance licenses and was a stock broker for 3 years. So I am extremely comfortable with all issues of finance and would be able to teach the Series 7 as well, having taken and passed it easily.

Ian Y. was amazing! — Ian was a perfect tutor for our son from the very beginning! He was responsive and proactive from the get-go. He made setting up appointments easy. Our son loved working with Ian and went up many points on his ACT score in only three weeks. He was fun, yet kind, positive and always encouraging. I would recommend Ian very, very highly!! ...
