Hi, I'm Katy! I have a master's degree in School Psychology, a license in educational psychology, a teaching credential, and a bachelor's degree in English education. You can probably tell that I love helping students learn!

In my first year as a high school English teacher, I found myself always drawn to helping students with unique learning needs. I discovered a passion for supporting neurodiverse learners on an individual level. I left the classroom to become an educational therapist, which is a teacher who provides personalized academic and behavior support for K-12 students who need extra help with school. This work was so interesting and fulfilling to me that I decided to go back to college to study school psychology. It was the right choice! I learned to collect academic and behavioral data, recognize and describe learning disabilities, and problem-solve with students and adults to find solutions for kids at school. Today, I proudly work in schools as a school psychologist and with students at home as a licensed educational psychologist providing tutoring support that equips students with skills they will use for life.

With over ten years of experience, I'm an expert when it comes to helping students build their reading, writing, math, and executive functioning skills. I use a student-centered, neurodiversity-affirming approach to help students take ownership of their school performance by recognizing their own strengths and weaknesses. This means that I take time to build positive relationships with students and to understand their interests and abilities. I develop appropriate goals for my students and track progress toward those goals through careful data collection. Parents of my students always know what we're working on and how it is going because I document goals and progress reports for them, always making myself available to answer questions and give recommendations.

ADHD

I've worked as an educational therapist for K-12 students with ADHD for over seven years. As a school psychologist, I have also completed psychoeducational assessments and helped to write IEP accommodations for students impacted by ADHD.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I've worked one-on-one with K-12 students on the spectrum for over ten years. Whether students need help with reading, writing, math, or organization, I have learned to empower students with Autism by being an active listener, offering choices and solutions whenever possible, and letting students lead their learning with gentle guidance and clear communication.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I've been designing and implementing reading interventions for seven years. I've used Barton curriculum and an Orton Gillingham approach to phonics instruction for three years. As a school psychologist, I have assessed and identified students with dyslexia, as well as helped to write IEP documentation based on a learning profile of dyslexia.

Katy P. is wonderful!

We have had a few sessions with Katy now, and she is fantastic with my ADHD 3rd grader who just transitioned to homeschool. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and positive, and kind. She has excellent skills in helping with common ADHD issues like emotional regulation, while also helping us move forward with academics in a positive and creative way. Highly recommend!!!

Katy saved the day

Katy replied to our last minute tutor request to help my daughter proofread and edit her final essay for her Freshman English comp class. She was flexible with her hours and provided valuable feedback so my daughter felt confident in submitting her final paper. She also helped her by teaching her a strategy to color code her ideas to help build a cohesive paper. My daughter was so happy with the feedback Katy provided. This is our first time using Wyzant and we will be sure to keep Katy at the top of our tutor list the next time she needs a tutor!
