If you were stranded on a deserted island, could you reinvent Algebra? Calculus? Trigonometry? I could! Not that that would be the most practical thing to do, but once you understand the basic concepts, you will be able to do the same. I could!

Not that that would be the most practical thing to do, but once you understand the basic concepts, you will be able to do the same.

I am a strong believer in understanding concepts and knowing fundamentals, NOT in doing math by rote. I will certainly help you get your homework done and get better grades, but I will also make sure that you understand it!

I teach students techniques to check their work: both by "sanity checks" as in "Does this answer make sense?" and also by reversing the process or calculation. You test an addition problem by subtraction, you test an integration by differentiation, etc.

Knowledge and understanding are empowering and enduring.

Mediocre grades can be enduring too. Let's get to work!

Hebrew

I'm an almost-native speaker of Hebrew. I moved to live in Israel at age nine (in the middle of 4th grade) and was completely immersed in the language and culture. I graduated high school there having studied Hebrew grammar, Hebrew literature, Bible, History, and Talmud. I am familiar with Trope (mostly Ashkenazi variants) and tutor Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah students on Torah and Prayer. I am also familiar with ritual prayer Hebrew, the traditional bits of Aramaic included. I'm knowledgeable with traditions, observances, songs, and melodies - and am always happy to share.

My undergraduate degree (BSEE) in Electrical Engineering is from Rice University in Houston Texas. My focus was circuits, communication, and control systems, my minor was computer engineering. I've got all the bases covered with my Masters' degree (MSEE) from USC with a digital signal and digital image processing major and a special certificate for multimedia and creative technologies. I've worked in applying these in the semiconductor, aerospace, medical, energy, and robotics industries. I love putting science to work and spend lots of time helping others do the same: encouraging kids and young adults to study and succeed in the sciences.

Excellent first session

Sharon helped my daughter get up to speed in the first session after she started falling behind in her honors geometry class. It's good for us but maybe not so good for Sharon's business :) Thanks you so much!

So appreciative of Sharon's ability to be available to help may daughter with precalc study (for USC!). A lifesaver! Thank you so much for the time and effort spent with my daughter today.

Fantastic calculus tutor

Sharon is very professional. She always arrives on time, she knows what she's talking about and tailors the instruction to my daughter's needs. She always finds out what my daughter is struggling with as well as what she is comfortable with, and builds on what she knows to expand into what she doesn't know. She is personable and interested in my daughter's life in general but doesn't waste a lot of time on it. One other thing she does is she doesn't force feed the instruction but rather "discovers" the solutions with my daughter. This helps her overcome her math anxiety and gain confidence in problem solving in general. Sharon is a great teacher.

A math Angel!

Sharon is incredibly helpful and knows exactly how to gage your level of understanding to fit instruction based on that assessment. A huge help!

Thank you, Sharon!

Sharon was in tune with what the SAT Math requirements are and helped my daughter improve her SAT Math score. She was fair and never charged us extra. She was flexible and great to work with. I definitely recommend her and thank her for her support and guidance!!
