Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete Math can be one of the most challenging of undergrad math courses. It is reminiscent of geometry, in that it has a main focus of "why", rather than the "what and where" of algebra and calculus. The symbolic language of Discrete Math is usually a bit challenging for most students. Upside down E's and A's can be confusing...Always....Sometimes... Getting to the details of each statement and it's composite statement of undeniable conclusion, can take more creativity than writing music or literature. Understanding in this course helps one define truth in other non-numerical topics as well.
Finite Math

Finite Math

Finite Math is a summary course that covers the types of real world applications that most adults will need in this day and age. It is a course designed to challenge the student's translation abilities between the world we live in, and the mathematics we can use in it to make good decisions and choices in our lives. Most often, this type of student will need to engage the new ideas of ambiguity and possibility, where they had previously only needed calculations and absolutes. I work with my students in this class, by relying on the ultimate question of, "does it make sense?". In this way, we can understand the truth of the language of mathematics, instead of relying on memorized recipes to cook up some numbers.
Geometry

Geometry

I have taught and tutored geometry throughout its junior high, high school and college phases. The surest way to understanding and a good grade is through building a foundation of the geometrical universe of mathematics identities and definitions. Lots of relevant examples and good foundations lead to building greater understanding.
Probability

Probability

Probability and statistics can really throw a wrench into the understanding of mathematics for many students. Deriving four decimal places to come up with an answer that involves terms like,‘probably’, is usually the equivalent of false advertising for most students in math. All that work for a maybe?! Even still, it can be demystified with just a little bit of understanding and some help from a reliable and understandable tutor. That’s where I come in. I’ve been teaching and tutoring statistics for more than 10 years. My students usually find relevance and a personal connection with this topic. I can help you make sense out of your studies, or at the very least, a great grade in your course.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have many years' (10+) tutoring experience with students ranging in ages from 6 - 52. I hold a degree in secondary education from UNR, and have been able to establish a strong core of study skill facilitation to accompany my math tutoring and lessons. My overall study methods involve the mantra, "if you don't have a plan, then you are planning to fail". After addressing any organizational concerns, I evaluate each student's personal learning basis...visual, kinetic, auditory, etc. I conduct each lesson in a compatible way with their personal learning style. The key to their success is usually a direct result of each student's ability to identify and understand how they "get it" and then to consistently pursue understanding in THAT/THOSE way(s).

Wonderful tutor! Knows her math and knows how to teach it.

As the parent of a high school junior who was struggling with his second semester pre-calculus curriculum, I hired Paige through WyzAnt Tutoring Services. She was recommended to us by a friend, and I was impressed with her background and experience. My son’s performance in pre-calculus had dropped to a C average during his second semester and I was looking for some additional support to help him gain a more solid understanding of the concepts as well as to raise his grade. In a very short time, Paige was able to accomplish both of these goals. In eight tutoring sessions which spanned a total of six weeks, she worked diligently with him to boost his grade nine percentage points, ultimately earning him a B in the course. Thanks to Paige’s instruction, he earned a 94% or higher on his last three exams (including the final exam) which demonstrated his improved understanding of the curriculum. Paige’s subject knowledge, teaching experience, excellent communication skills, patience, and enthusiasm definitely contributed to my son’s success. During the six weeks that Paige worked with my son, she demonstrated a vigorous understanding of pre-calculus. She demystified complex concepts such as polar coordinates, vectors, and conics as well as reviewed fundamental trigonometric functions that were critical to his overall understanding of the course and ultimate success on the final exam. Having earned a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley, I was impressed with not only her understanding of the subject matter, but her passion for math. This was evident in our conversations as well as in the tutoring summaries that she would provide after each lesson. But effective teaching requires much more than an understanding of the subject. Paige took the time to observe my son’s problem solving techniques, leading to a better understanding of how he learned and where he could make improvements. She would make meaningful connections between concepts, offer helpful tips and shortcuts, as well as encourage him to better organize his handwork. Paige demonstrated particular strengths in her ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Her patience and ability to simplify difficult concepts was instrumental in helping him to master the curriculum. Lastly, Paige’s enthusiasm and passion for math facilitated learning. As tutoring sessions were scheduled weekly on Friday afternoons after a long week of studying, I was impressed that Paige was able to keep him engaged and focused. Her easy-going manner and spirited personality definitely helped to strengthen the tutor-student relationship. Paige is a reliable, hardworking, and exceptional tutor who has demonstrated a broad range of skills while working with my high school junior. In six short weeks, she enabled my son to master difficult pre-calculus concepts, contributing not only to his success, but also to his self-confidence. Hence I enthusiastically recommend Paige.

Paige is great!

Paige is helping both of my daughters in Algebra I and II. Helped to identify their strengths and weaknesses and developed a plan to move forward. Paige wants to not only understand the student but also the teacher and what they are looking for from the student. Really good communication from Paige as well!

Awesome tutor!

I’ve just started my tutoring sessions with Paige and have gained so much knowledge and confidence thanks to her commitment to my success. Her enthusiasm for the subject is contagious. Since childhood, math has never been a strong subject for me. Now, going back to college and taking a math class after so many years, I was even more discouraged. Paige understood my fears and helps me work through them as we go though my worksheets. I was anxious about a major exam and Paige reviewed the 3 chapters with me the day before. I was so happy to score a high B on that exam. I never thought I’d say math could be fun but I look forward to every lesson with her. Thank you Paige!

Great Finite Tutor!

Paige helped me prepare for my finite exam at Georgia Tech and was so helpful! She explained all the concepts so that they were easily understood and was very patient! Even though it was an online tutoring session, Paige would often look at my expressions and make sure I looked liked I was understanding things and if I looked confused would go over the problem again!

Very Knowledgeable and caring, I told her she is the Mary Poppins of Math, only with combat boots, Paige is a 'JOY'

Paige has slowed down my anxiety and nervousness, now I can focus on the learning and not the falling or failing part, I have a new outlook on math and I love Math, the beauty of the mathematical "world of numbers and stuff" (to quote Paige), all the best.

Patient and encouraging tutor.

Paige is working really well with our son. He reports that she is good at explaining the geometry concepts, helps him organize his study tools and also holds him accountable for his work between sessions. She is caring and enthusiastic about the subject and comes across as genuinely caring about my sons learning, not just about passing tests.

Very knowledgeable!

Paige was on time and ready to tutor me with math subjects. Paige helped me get a better understanding of Set Operations and Venn Diagrams. Paige took her time to carefully explain each step and she even created examples to help me get the material. I would recommend Paige and I plan on using her in the future!

Saved My Grade

Paige is an awesome tutor and she saved my grade in my intense summer statistics class. In the class I was completely confused about the material. I was very comfortable with Paige with all of our sessions. We had two lessons every week so I could keep up with the class and so understand the homework. She is very flexible with my ADHD and she explained the material I didn’t understand and throughly explained it to me in a way I could understand. Without her I would have not passed this class. Thanks Paige!!!
