My name is Greg W., and I am a credentialed high school English teacher in California, where I have been teaching for over twenty years. My master’s degree in teaching and my bachelor’s degree in music education are both from Chapman University. Over the years, I have taught and tutored thousands of high school English students at all skill levels from Advanced/AP to summer school makeup classes, and what I have come to understand is that the best learning happens when the teacher makes it clear that they care for the student and gets to know them well enough to really understand what they need to learn. This is the strength of tutoring and the primary reason I enjoy it. Because of this, I work hard to get to know my students well and tailor lessons to meet their individual needs, creating learning experiences that are both enjoyable and effective. My lessons typically introduce a single skill in an engaging way, then provide the student with the opportunity to practice that new skill along with previously learned skills, and finally close with feedback and reflection to reinforce the learning.

As a teacher, one of my specialties is AP Literature and Composition, a class that I’ve taught to seniors for over a decade. In that time, I developed and refined many materials and strategies to prepare students for the AP Literature exam, college-level reading and writing, and college application essays. What I have found is that many of the teaching strategies that I have developed and implemented at the AP level have worked just as effectively with my regular sophomore English classes. I have seen students at all levels improve their literary and rhetorical analysis, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and personal narratives.

Whether an AP student or a student struggling to find success in English, I would love the opportunity to help your student meet their academic goals. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss developing an academic plan.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I am currently a high school English teacher who teaches a creative writing class. The class covers short stories, poetry, and screenplays and is designed to provide students with a solid foundation on which to build their work. In narratives, I teach students how to create engaging description, internal monologue, and dialogue and integrate them into an effective narrative structure. In poetry, I teach students how to make poetic choices in areas such as diction, structure, and rhythm to vividly enhance the meaning of their work.
English

English

I have taught high school English for over two decades and have extensive experience teaching students with diverse abilities and academic goals. My years teaching AP Literature to seniors and my advanced sophomore English courses, which are designed to prepare students specifically for AP Language and Composition, have given me extensive experience challenging ambitious, high-achieving students. Similarly, my experience teaching regular sophomore English classes has taught me how to motivate and meet the different needs of students for whom English may be more of a challenge. Additionally, I have worked closely with my school's English Learner population (students who are learning English as a second language) and students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which has given me great insight into how to help them improve and succeed. This breadth of experience enables me to recognize what each individual student requires so that I can design instruction tailored to help them achieve their unique academic goals.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

As a high school English teacher, I regularly teach students to write literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, expository writing, research papers, synthesis essays, and personal narratives. Having taught AP Literature for over 10 years, I have developed materials and strategies designed to prepare students to write sophisticated, well-structured analytical essays in a timed environment. My goal is to equip my students with the skills necessary to succeed in any writing task they face in the future.
Reading

Reading

I have taught high school English for over two decades and have extensive experience teaching reading to students with diverse abilities and academic goals. Over that time, I have developed a large library of handouts, lessons, and strategies to help students learn to read with sophisticated understanding and insight. My years teaching AP Literature to seniors and my advanced sophomore English courses, which are designed to prepare students specifically for AP Language and Composition, have given me extensive experience challenging ambitious, high-achieving students to make sophisticated inferences from complex texts. Similarly, my experience teaching regular sophomore English classes has taught me how to teach them to recognize not only what is stated directly but also what is merely implied. Additionally, I have worked closely with my school's English Learner population (students who are learning English as a second language) and students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which has given me opportunity to develop strategies to meet their needs. This breadth of experience means I don’t try to force learners to conform to my program; rather, I try to design reading lessons tailored to their academic needs.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Having taught seniors in high school, including AP Literature, for over two decades, I have developed and refined comprehensive strategies and lessons to address each of the SAT Reading and Writing question types. My tutoring methodology begins with a diagnostic test to determine areas of weakness, and I then design lessons and homework that prioritize the areas of greatest need to ensure the greatest positive impact on the student's score. What sets me apart, however, is the insight into individual learners I have developed through working with thousands of students over my teaching career. I know how to recognize and meet the unique needs of every learner, which is vitally important in ensuring that each individual student receives the instruction that they need to succeed.
