I hold a B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in biochemistry. Using molecular cloning, I have also conducted research in biochemistry and neuroscience laboratories at UC Riverside and San Diego State University. I have extensive teaching experience in college-level general chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience from three different universities, as well as experience in tutoring individuals at both the high school and college levels. My goal is to help any student understand, summarize, and prepare for comprehensive chemistry exams in order to obtain a desired result in a relatively short amount of time.

I am excited to work with passionate students in achieving their goals!

AP chemistry should be as high-level as a general chemistry course in college. In order to guide students, I have notes and worksheets organized by topic on my website. My AP students solve practice questions from previous exams created by CollegeBoard on each topic. AP chemistry is usually an easier course to approach due to the plethora of information available online and the types of questions on the test administered by CollegeBoard. The SAT chemistry subject test is easier for some students because of the simple question types and shorter proctored test time. Although it often requires many months of organized preparation in order to obtain a score over 90%, I have had some very successful students achieve this in only six to ten weeks. Students lose interest in the subject primarily because of a poor understanding of stoichiometry. Once they understand the concepts of a mole and of molarity, most of them are comfortable with solving comprehensive questions in more advanced topics. In order to help students, I teach a fairly simple approach to Lewis dot structures, and utilize model kits to simulate molecular geometry. I also introduce a shortcut to hybridization that many students find to be helpful.

Knowledgeable & Caring.

Julie taught SAT Chemistry to my daughter. Julie taught the material not just from a test-taking perspective but also improved my daughter's understanding of key concepts. Most importantly, she found and eliminated weaknesses in test taking strategy. Overall, my daughter is much more confident about the material and about taking the test.

Amazing tutor for college chemistry classes, helped me earn A’s in Chem 1A and 1B!

Julie is an amazing tutor! I worked with Julie for an entire year, through 2 semesters of general chemistry in college (Chem 1A and 1B). I previously took Honors Chemistry in high school a long time ago but when I signed up for Chem 1A in college, I was scared and felt extremely unprepared. Over the break before the semester started, Julie designed a 6-week “crash course” in chemistry to help me re-learn fundamental concepts and introduce me to new topics. Before starting our lessons, she asked me which textbook we used and came up with a curriculum and custom-made worksheets that matched the textbook. For each lesson, she would send me a worksheet in advance to guide me through the material. If I solved problems outside of our lessons, I would send her a picture of my solution, and she would reply with my graded work within a few hours. In just 6 weeks, meeting twice a week, we were able to cover molar ratios, lewis structures and molecular geometry, stoichiometry, balancing reactions, thermodynamics, the gas laws, etc. I met with Julie 2x a week every week that semester and got an A in Chem 1A! Julie’s teaching techniques, like emphasizing important topics from the textbook, mnemonics and setups for problems (ICE table, BCA table, dimensional analysis), and demonstration of how to solve problems, were very useful when I actually took the class. They made me super prepared and also helped form my own study habits. I signed up for Chem 1B the following semester and had already built up my confidence, but I asked Julie to do another crash course with me during the break. This time we did a 2-month “summer boot camp”, and were able to go more in-depth on Chem 1B topics, like aqueous solution stoichiometry, titrations and buffers, equilibrium, kinetics, and more thermodynamics. The concepts were more complex and required a holistic understanding of topics covered previously. Again, Julie was able to help me learn the material by presenting it in an approachable way. I ended up scoring a perfect 100% on every test in Chem 1B! As an added bonus, I knew how to solve the assigned problems well before the topics were covered in lecture, so I was able to practice relevant problems on my own multiple times before each test, even when I didn’t have a tutoring lesson scheduled that week. I’m so happy to have gotten A’s in both Chem 1A and Chem 1B thanks to Julie’s help. I truly feel that I’ve mastered the material and even feel confident enough to major in chemistry (even though I declared computer science lol). I would recommend Julie to anyone studying chemistry, she’s simply the best!

Very knowledgable and patient tutor

Julie has really helped focus on my chemistry studies during the final months of prep. I have had almost 80 lessons with Julie and can safely say that she is the best at what she does. Her material and deep understanding of the chemistry contents (this includes the AP Chemistry College Board tested contents) allows for efficient tutoring and a more personal schedule. Julie can develop a clear understanding of any topic due to her ability to connect with the student and her ability to explain the contents in an assortment of ways. Her various assignments provide a concrete explanation and challenging comprehensive study questions. I would like to point out that as a junior in high school these questions and complementary e-mail services really helped me make some time to study chemistry. Another great benefit is her complementary e-mail communication which provides excessive prep materials for every big idea of AP Chemistry. Julie works very hard to respond to her e-mails and make her classes as efficient as possible. I cannot possibly describe how much Julie has inspired me for my future studies and can assure anyone interested in contacting her that she will lead you to success. Thanks Julie!

Excellent Tutor!

So happy that we have Julie as the chem tutor for my daughter. She has so much knowledge about AP Chem. She is such a responsible tutor, following up with my daughter closely to make sure that she got the class notes and had well prepared before each lesson. Besides reviewing my daughter's work from school, she also assigned more challenging problems to make sure that my daughter fully understood how to solve the problems before quiz/exam. Great job!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Thanks Julie for assessing Trisha's knowledge. We felt Julie was very knowledgable and patient with Trisha and asked the right questions and responded to guide her. Despite initial technical issues she was persistent in completing the assessment.
