My educational background includes a PhD in Earth and Planetary Science from Harvard and a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Caltech. Throughout my time at both institutions there were many students who had the motivation to succeed but were struggling with understanding or putting the class material into practice. Often, this was because of a mismatch in students' learning styles and the presentation of the materials. At Caltech especially, I was lucky enough to be part of such a supportive community of students helping each other find alternate ways to understand the concepts we were all learning that I found myself falling in love with the process of helping others learn. Halfway through my time there, I began teaching in a more official capacity as a Peer Academic Coach, and continued teaching in graduate school as a Teaching Fellow and summer research program mentor.
I have experience tutoring students in physics and mathematics from high school to advanced college level, and experience teaching and mentoring college students in introductory coding and laboratory research methods. These experiences have come over the course of the past 8 years and have ranged from one-on-one sessions with students who needed additional instruction, homework help, or targeted practice with specific concepts, to classroom or workshop settings with 20-30 students.
My methods center around personalizing material to the applications the individual student cares about or finds interesting, with a very strong emphasis on "if you don't know, try something and see what happens". In my view, tutoring sessions should be a relatively low-stakes place to make mistakes, which is a key piece of actually internalizing anything. I welcome any specific material or resources from classes the student may be taking to help with tailoring lessons to any targeted objectives they may be trying to reach.
