Hello!

My name is Ben L. and I am a medical student at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. I earned my BA in Psychology from Cornell University, where I also triple minored in Biology, European Studies, and Theatre. I have years of tutoring experience helping students prepare for the SAT and ACT, improving students' grades in high school and middle school STEM classes, editing secondaries and personal statements for MD & DO medical school applications, and much more!

As a tutor, I know that each of my students will have a different level of experience with the material -- due to differences in learning styles, educational background, and (critically) their motivation to work hard for their academic success. That's why I focus my first session not only assessing each student's proficiency in the material, but getting to know them as a person. Because if I can develop a bond with my students, coming to sessions will feel meaningful -- not simply "extra homework".

And, speaking of outside work -- you will never have to pay for outside materials as my student. Period. I utilize free online materials, including practice exams for my test prep students -- and any gaps are filled in with my own materials. Because I know tutoring can be expensive. So why should you pay any more for extra materials?

-------------

I specialize in Med School Application Admissions Counseling (including Personal Statement and Secondary Essay Reviews for AMCAS, TMDSAS, and AACOMAS schools, along with mock MMI & traditional interviews) and have a 100% success rate at getting long-term students into med school. But I tutor for many more subjects -- you can see them all on my profile! If you don't see your chosen subject available on Instant Book, it just means I require a brief conversation before booking our first session - to ensure I'm the best fit for your needs. Send me a message using the "Contact Benjamin" button and then I'll book the session for you after our discussion.

I am so excited to meet you and get to work!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I got a perfect 36 on the ACT English section and my success came from many years of essay editing. I learned from the best on how to recognize grammar mistakes and that has made me an expert on the English section!
ACT Math

ACT Math

I received a 35 on the ACT Math Section, as well as a 35 overall score on the ACT. My approach to ACT Math prep involves a combination of practice exams, content review, and testing strategies. I use a preliminary practice exam to figure out the critical areas for improvement. Then, I utilize various strategies, all of which have helped my students (across the scoring spectrum) see improvements in their scores and abilities.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I got a perfect 36 on the ACT Science section when I took the exam. Plus, as a medical student, I can assure you that science courses have and will continue to be prominent in my academic career. Because of this, I have been cementing my knowledge in these subjects year after year. The material is fresh in my brain and I have been tested on this material throughout that time (including recently while taking the MCAT) -- providing me with an angle unique to very few tutors out there.
Acting

Acting

I have years of experience in theatre, from acting to tech and from high school to university-level work. As a tutor, I have worked with many actors to critique and craft monologues and scenes. I specialize in contemporary dramatic work, but I can help with any genre! As a tutor, I will work as your "director" and focus on the emotion in a scene/monologue. I will break down your tactics, objectives, and super objectives and relate them to real life, which hopefully will make your time working with me fun and exciting (as many of my past students can attest to)!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the foundation for any higher math class, and I have developed master lesson plans for any topic in the subject matter. I use my resources to provide practice problems and full explanations for problems, so that my students fully understand what they are doing. This sets them up for future math topics and inspires a passion for the subject, as they realize that Algebra does not have to be as hard as it seems!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have years of experience tutoring peers and younger students in math, including in this foundational area of Algebra 2. For Algebra 2 students, I provide plenty of practice problems and strategies for approaching the various ways you might be asked to manipulate equations, graphs, or other mathematical bases. I do this in an engaging way to keep my students motivated to learn, which ultimately leads to great improvements in grades and knowledge.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I received a perfect 5 on the AP Chemistry Exam and, as a medical student, chemistry continues to be a prominent component of my academic career -- having taken courses up to the biochemistry level in undergrad. As a tutor, this is extremely helpful, as I not only have been refreshing my knowledge from high school chemistry courses (including Honors Chemistry & AP Chem), but I have continuously been tested on this material, including on standardized exams like the MCAT. This allows me to not only be able to teach the material with success, but have fresh test taking experience to apply and pass on to my students in the form of test taking strategies.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As an Ivy League graduate and recent medical school applicant, I have fresh knowledge about the admissions process. This has led to major successes as an admissions consultant - with my students getting interviews at top programs (including Harvard, Stanford, UChicago, and Einstein), and overall boasting a 100% success rate at getting long-term students into medical school. My specialties as a college admissions advisor are helping students create a solid school list and craft meaningful personal statements & secondary essays, along with offering mock interviews and MMIs that parallel what you will see on interview day - but please feel free to reach out with any of your needs and I'd be glad to let you know if I can help! NOTE: Due to a conflict of interest, I am unable to provide any admissions counseling related to admission to programs of the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have years of experience working with students to edit their personal statements & secondary essays for college and medical school admissions - with great success! 100% of my long-term students have been accepted into medical school! I work with students throughout the writing process, from brainstorming to final proofreading, to ensure that each student uniquely and strategically shows their best selves when applying to the nation's top programs.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is unique in that it combines visual learning with the logic-based learning traditionally associated with math as a subject. This can be helpful for some and challenging for others. So, I use the knowledge that I've gained through tutoring in the subject in order to meet students where they are at. By utilizing an intuitive assessment of comfort levels, I am able to then incorporate practice problems that continuously engage my students and have them feeling confident about their abilities after the session.
Grammar

Grammar

As a med school & college admissions expert, I specialize in editing admissions essays to ensure they are *fit to submit* to top programs. Of course, this means collaborating on the topic of the essay. That said, along the way, I will ensure that grammar mistakes are identified and corrected so that even the minor details are sorted out for an amazing product! Even if you're not working on an admissions essay, though, I am happy to individualize my grammar expertise to your tutoring needs - so reach out and I'd be happy to work with you!
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

As a USC medical student and Cornell graduate with experience as an admissions interviewer, I have fresh knowledge on the college admissions process, especially for getting into med school. I have years of experience as a med school admissions consultant and have had great success - with 100% of my long-term students getting into medical school. This includes offering mock traditional interviews and MMIs with questions that mirror what you will see on interview day. Each mock interview will include a comprehensive feedback session, including strategies that will allow you to show your best self in a virtual format.
ISEE

ISEE

The ISEE is an exam critical to success for admissions to top private high schools, with an exam layout similar to the well known SAT. I have years of experience tutoring middle school and high school students for exam prep, including on the ISEE. My specialty is in the upper level mathematics section and I help students with concept review, testing strategy, and time training to ensure score improvement. I work with each young pupil to create individualized lesson plans that maximize the time in each session, without overworking the students.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I have years of experience working with students to edit their personal statements & secondary essays for college and medical school admissions - with great success! 100% of my long-term students have been accepted into medical school! I work with students throughout the writing process, from brainstorming to final proofreading, to ensure that each student uniquely and strategically shows their best selves when applying to the nation's top programs.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

As a math tutor, I have experience teaching students with various levels of math expertise. When it comes to pre-algebra, I know that students are beginning their middle school and high school math journeys. So, I take the time to go over problems to make sure that students feel COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT with each concept. By combining my patience, intuition, and experience, I know that I can improve your student's pre-algebra grades significantly.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is, of course, a prerequisite course for calculus. More than that, though, it is a challenging composition of topics, calling upon prior trigonometry, geometry, and algebra knowledge. As your tutor, I will utilize a "practice and review" method. Through this method, I will use many practice problems in order to identify the areas in which you need to improve most. At that point, I can go into topics more in-depth and ensure that you not only understand the concepts, but also feel CONFIDENT going into exams and future calculus courses.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have years of experience working with students to edit their personal statements & secondary essays for college and medical school admissions - with great success! PSAT

PSAT

I was recognized by College Board as a National Merit Commended Scholar after taking the PSAT myself. Now, I use my success and tutoring experience to master an approach to improving your student's PSAT score. My specialty is in the math section of the PSAT, but I have also mastered tutoring strategies for the other sections of the exam.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I got a perfect 800 on the SAT Math Section and this is my specialty subject for tutoring. I use real practice exams from College Board in order to assess what areas your student needs to improve upon. Then, I can help them review various math concepts and testing strategies to efficiently improve their score. This approach has been quite effective with my students; so, I know that it can help your student, too!

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry represents a critical point on the road to higher-level math courses. I understand how difficult this step can be for students; so, I make sure to make the concepts as clear and SIMPLE as possible. I do this by providing lots of strategies for handling trig functions, with and without a calculator. Combined with plenty of practice, my strategies have been proven to increase understanding in my students, and I know I can be a great fit for your student, too!

Benjamin was so amazing to work with. He's very knowledgeable, patient, and thorough. I was very impressed by all the time he spent outside of lessons finding practice materials and tests. My SAT score improved a lot from working with him and I have a lot more knowledge overall.
