If you’re looking to match a special tutor with a special student, I hope you will contact me! I’m a dynamic educator, writer, curriculum developer, artist, and musician with over 20 years teaching experience in classrooms and community settings. I hold a Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University, where I focused on Arts in Education. I’m adept at bringing school subjects to life with a creative approach. My career has focused on helping children and adults in all areas of English as well as ESL, Study Skills, Visual Art , Music and Spanish.

Are you learning English? I work with ESL students on conversation, pronunciation, grammar, writing, and everyday communication skills to live and work in the U.S.
For students seeking help with study skills, I provide test preparation strategies, graphic organizers, time management approaches and other methods tailored to individual needs.

I specialize in serving children from kindergarten through the elementary grades – covering phonics, vocabulary development, writing, reading comprehension, and other fundamental skills. I also tutor in elementary math concepts, Social Studies, and science topics. My experience includes work with students who have special needs and learning challenges.

Research shows that early support and remediation make a significant difference in students’ later academic success and self-confidence. I can help by providing patient, supportive instruction and help with homework, school projects, enrichment, study skills, and organization. Making learning fun is one of my goals. I believe that young students are more eager to learn when they can be creative and engaged. When appropriate, I enjoy using hands-on approaches such as educational games, book-making, art projects related to school subjects, and creative drama activities - to facilitate learning and keep students motivated.

Along with tutoring, I would be happy to help any homeschool families develop “learning expeditions,” units of study, creative projects, or other resourc

For 12 years, I coordinated an afterschool tutoring program at the Jackson Mann Community Center in Allston, MA - where I administered educational assessments, and developed/implemented individualized remedial tutoring plans for elementary students. I have also worked as a paraprofessional (teacher's assistant) in bilingual and special needs classes, as a lead afterschool teacher and curriculum developer, as an ELL tutor for Boston Public Schools, and as a visual arts Teaching Artist in a school partnership program.

I hold a Certificate of Educational Studies in TEFL/ TESOL from the TEFL Training College.
Flute

Flute

I began playing the flute at age 16, and I am now in my late 50s. I graduated from community college as a music major with honors, then attended Berklee College of Music as a Flute Performance major for 3 semesters. I followed those studies with approximately 6 more years of flute study in non-credit settings. I have performed and also taught flute when my schedule has allowed. I love sharing this beautiful instrument with students!

General Music

I am a professional musician specializing in flute performance and instruction along with general music and music appreciation. Previously, I studied at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music's Extension Division in both classical and jazz flute performance. My areas of particular interest include jazz, improvisational music, world music, and Brasilian music. I'm available to teach both online and in my Monterey CA studio. I work with beginners through advanced intermediate players.
Handwriting

Handwriting

As After school Education Coordinator of an urban community center for 12 years, I worked with numerous students on fundamental literacy skills. I helped many of our first and second graders learn beginning penmanship skills, including proper pencil grasp, letter formation, stroke direction and spacing. I also helped older students in their process of learning cursive writing. Additionally, I have served as a paraprofessional (teacher's assistant) in a special needs classroom. In this position, I assisted students whose handwriting was further impacted by fine motor control problems and/or issues with spatial orientation, letter reversals and other challenges.
Phonics

Phonics

I have many years of professional experience tutoring elementary grade students in phonics. In a position as Afterschool Education Coordinator for 12 years, I administered the Brigance Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills. This assessment tool targeted specific phonics skills. In response to the student assessments, I developed and implemented remedial tutoring plans for phonics and other basic skills. I have also tutored English Language Learners (ELL students) in phonics.

Excellent, patient, and responsive tutor

Ellen was my Spanish tutor for 6 months. Prepping for a move to South America, it was imperative that I had a foundation for the language. She developed customized lessons to meet my needs, and always worked at my pace. She was extremely attentive and accommodating for my busy schedule. I would highly recommend Ellen as a tutor!
