I have been tutoring for many years and really enjoy helping students improve their skills in the areas they are having trouble with. I am skilled in teaching 1st to 7th grade students, as I have had classroom, homeschool, and tutoring experience for about 25 years. I help students improve their reading and writing skills, understand grammar, improve spelling, become skilled at basic math or pre-algebra, learn about history and geography or basic science, and even become adept at beginner chess. I have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (K-8) and Supplementary Authorization to teach Math and Social Studies in Middle School.

My thoughtful and patient approach helps students relax and enjoy the learning experience. I am able to break down concepts well and address any stumbling blocks. As students learn new concepts and skills, they gain confidence and their grades improve as well! I know I can be of help to many 1st-7th grade students.

In English, my knowledge of sentence and paragraph construction contributes to their writing improvement. We work on grammar and spelling within a creative writing framework. If desired, handwriting skills can also be worked on. In teaching reading, I use phonics techniques to help students learn to sound out new words and begin to read sentences more comfortably and smoothly.

In Math, I work patiently with students in all areas of difficulty, helping them master new concepts in basic arithmetic or in learning how to solve word problems with confidence. I also help students learn basic addition or multiplication facts if needed, so that they will have the confidence in handling math operations without having to pause for each fact or count their fingers. I am especially good at teaching fractions, decimals, and percent in a way that students will understand the underlying concepts. Pre-algebra is important as a bridge from basic math to algebra and I make sure all concepts are learned thoroughly.

Take care, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

My professional history includes a great deal of experience teaching all subjects and grade levels in Elementary School except for Kindergarten. I hold both a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and an English language learner certificate. I have taught or tutored children in math, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, handwriting, history, geography, science, and chess. Math would include all 1st-7th grade arithmetic and pre-algebra topics, and how to confidently solve word problems.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I enjoy teaching basic math and arithmetic, helping students to be comfortable with numbers and to be able to solve math problems. I break down and illustrate concepts in a way that is understandable to the student, encouraging them as they make progress. I can teach 1st to 7th grade math, including fractions, decimals, and percent.
Geography

Geography

I can familiarize students with U.S. and World Geography. I have had an interest in maps since a young age and have helped others learn geography both as a tutor and in school. I have a step-by-step approach in helping students be able to fill out blanks maps of the U.S., including state names, cities, and major rivers and lakes.
Grammar

Grammar

I have had an aptitude and fondness for correct grammar throughout my life. I am able to help anyone wanting to improve his or her grammar and/or writing. I use dictation techniques and not just a review of rules, so that one's writing is improved in a more natural way. I have had experience in proofreading that lends well to this subject.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have 2 years full-time homeschool teaching experience. I can formulate a curriculum, implement what you already have, or supplement subject material. I am able to cover a wide range of subjects and can break down concepts in an understandable way. If you prefer part-time help, I am available for that as well.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have taught pre-algebra as a tutor, bridging basic math topics such as fractions, decimals, and percent, with beginning algebra concepts. This includes topics such as positive/negative numbers, the distributive property, and coordinate geometry. I also focus on approaching and solving word problems without apprehension.
Reading

Reading

I have had experience teaching children how to read. This includes beginning readers and also those who need help improving their reading fluidity. I am patient and will encourage the student as he or she makes progress. I incorporate basic phonics rules and have a technique for deciphering longer more difficult words.

Wonderful teacher!

My son really enjoys working with John. My son hasn’t gone to school on zoom in months and never paid attention and got extremely behind as he is not motivated; after working with John he is finally inspired and motivated again! He came very prepared as well bringing items that will help him learn and grasp concepts. They have been working on catching up on class work, as well as a things not in the curriculum and spending more time in areas needed as the school work jumps around and isn’t enough lessons on certain areas. My son has OCD, ADHD, and anxiety and John has made my son very comfortable and excited to continue learning! As a parent it is also refreshing having a teacher work with him that reminds me of the type of traditional teachers from my era, as the school system today has gone south. We look forward to continued success working together and the idea of actual full home school seems possible now.
