I've enjoyed teaching online and in person for 12,000 hours since 2010. I am patient, curious, and capable of working with all learning styles.

I graduated with a Computational Cognitive Sciences degree from UCI in 2019. Cognitive Science is my passion! It is basically the study of cognition (thinking). It uses neuroscience to understand how the brain learns and remembers, and much more.

I graduated with a Computational Cognitive Sciences degree from UCI in 2019. Cognitive Science is my passion! It is basically the study of cognition (thinking). It uses neuroscience to understand how the brain learns and remembers, and much more.

Math has always been my best subject and my tutoring career started out just as me helping friends in math but slowly expanded to become my full-time job as more and more people asked for my help. I began to tutor in other subjects as well and now also work with students on test preparation (ACT, SAT, GED...) Not only do I know these subjects very well, but my studies have helped me to be able to tailor my approach to each student individually. Learning is not one size fits all.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, I look forward to working with you!

Thank you,
Evan C.

ACT Math

ACT Math

With a 32 ACT score as a high school student, I did fairly well on the exam itself. Since then I have studied human cognitive function, memory, and test taking strategies. This has helped me reach the next level in helping my clients prepare for their exams. Every client I've worked with so far in the last six years on SAT and ACT prep has improved their score.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

With 7+ years experience in tutoring algebra as well as standardized test preparation (ACT/SAT etc) helping clients master algebra has been one of my main priorities. Students with weak algebra inevitability struggle in later maths and ideally helping students master algebra leaves them in a situation where they wont require a tutor for later maths. As with all subjects, I also focus on note-taking, studying strategy, and test-taking strategy. My current studies in the cognitive sciences allow me to incorporate the current scientific body of knowledge on human learning, memory, and decision-making into these strategies.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the most important math class for the majority of students. The basics learned here apply to many classes after this one. Many of the students I meet with struggling in calculus or precalculus actually just have weak algebra. Personally, I've applied algebra towards multiple calculus courses, and coding- Python and Matlab. Professionally I've been tutoring in algebra for 9 years now, and would be happy to help you too! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Calculus

Calculus

Initially started with calc AB in high school, then took all calculus courses at UCI before moving on to focus on linear algebra / machine learning / software. Been teaching calculus for 10 years now- quite a large portion of students in calculus are struggling because their algebra is suboptimal. There are also some students who struggle with calculus concepts, but this is an easier fix. The general strategy and approach to solving calculus questions differs greatly from mathematics students have taken in the past. These concepts, strategies, and algebra skills are the main focus for calculus students.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

The fundamentals- what a child learns at this level is the main factor in determining their later success in mathematics. It is absolutely essential to master the basics before moving forward. I absolutely love working with elementary students, as they have few or no bad habits to unlearn. I am familiar with the California course curriculum and there are many useful resources to help give students additional insight and practice on these topics. Please don't hesitate to message me with any questions you may have.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry, while very different than algebra/trig/precalc, is still essential for academic success. Its topics are covered on college entrance exams and form the basis for many important ideas in later mathematics. With 10 years experience tutoring geometry, I'd be happy to help you too! I offer a trial lesson to prospective students so we can be certain it's a good fit before working together. Best of luck with your studies!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Some of the most difficult calculus concepts are actually taught in pre-calculus, and these totally foreign ideas can be very difficult even for the best of students. Doing well in pre-calculus, especially in honors pre-calculus, requires an advanced mastery of algebra along with great organizational skills and study habits. I've been helping students in pre-calculus for almost a decade and would be happy to help you too! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
SAT Math

SAT Math

Standardized test can be prepared for just like any other exam. One of the things these exams test is a student's ability to prepare- being familiar with the format and concepts are an advantage. I've worked with the official test prep materials (not great), several proprietary materials, and mainly work out of the Princeton Review these days. Individual students differ in their understanding of the prerequisite courses, but all improve their scores with review and practice. I enjoy teaching standardized test prep because we get to cover so much content matter. It's a little more interesting than just teaching for one class.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics is a very unique subject. I view it as completely separate from mathematics. Most real statistics is done with computer programs. through research at school I've had experience with Matlab, python, spss etc. Due to the archaic nature of bureaucracy, many schools still focus on teaching handwritten statistics, which I have spent many years reviewing with students. For statistics like hypothesis testing, Anova, F test, chi Square, etc. I'm happy to help students for it a reasonable rate!
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Hello! The relationships between lengths and angles of triangles that students learn in trigonometry can be challenging in and of themselves. Even more important is how these concepts apply to later mathematics. I've been helping high school and college students with these topics for almost a decade. I'm confident I can help you too! Awesome tutor

Evan was an awesome tutor! This was my first time trying out tutors and the first meeting I had with him, the material we reviewed clicked so much faster than it did in my normal math class. He does a great job at explaining topics in easy and different ways which is a great help. Since the beginning he also gave me advice on what I could do at home to improve my study habits. Within just a week, I was able to get a higher grade on my test than I’ve been able to for the whole semester. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that needs the help!

Patient and kept my child's attention

Really broke the material down to an easily understandable level.. My daughter is very insecure about her math abilities, but Evan gave her confidence that she can learn and thrive over time.

Patient and helpful

Really was patient with me and took the time to make sure that I knew most of the test material without any hesitation. Gave me multiple resources to practice similar questions that were on my exam.

Great so far!

My son has only had 2 sessions with Evan, but so far, he far exceeds our expectations! My son is very happy with his progress and is more confident in his understanding of the English section of the ACT. The first practice tests shows improvement of 5 points in this area with the few tricks and tips that Evan has taught him. Evan is easy to work with and makes my son feel comfortable and confident in his abilities.

Patient and knowledgeable tutor

Evan worked with my 11th grader to help him get caught up in his pre calc class. He was very patient with my son and he was able to identity the areas where he needed additional help. I would recommend him to any parent who has a child who fell behind in math.
