Hello, my name is Michelle, and I am a patient teacher who has been tutoring students of all ages for the past few years. I have tutored many students that have been identified with learning difficulties including ADHD/ADD and dyslexia. Prior to tutoring, I taught high school science for five years and middle school math and science for two years. I have a PhD in biology, a multiple subject teaching credential, and a bachelor's degree in microbiology.
I am an excellent math and science teacher, and have taught students to be successful in other subjects too. I also teach test prep skills and have experience with the CBEST and GED. The science classes that I have taught students to understand and succeed in are general science, Earth science, biology, microbiology, and elementary school science. I have also taught students to comprehend and succeed in general math, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, and algebra 2. I have also improved students' reading and writing skills. I have taught students grammar, reading comprehension, phonics, and writing. Perhaps the most important information I teach falls under the category of study skills, which I incorporate into every subject. I emphasize how and what to study, as well as test taking skills. I have experience tutoring people of all ages, from elementary school through high school and college graduates.
I usually do a brief initial assessment of the student's strengths and areas which need improvement. Next, I tailor my teaching methods to the students' needs. My goal is for students to understand and love what they are learning. Please read the testimonials on my profile as well. I look forward to hearing from you. Hello, my name is Michelle, and I am a patient teacher who has been tutoring students of all ages for the past few years. I have tutored many students that have been identified with learning difficulties including ADHD/ADD and dyslexia.
Michelle seems to zero in on the method a student is using to help identify which step or area they need assistance with. She's very patient, shows students different ways to approach math problems that might work best with their style. After only a few sessions, my son has already stated how much she has helped him to better understand approach math - Algebra I & II, fractions, etc.
Michelle has been working with Alexa for about three months now, and I'm already seeing so much improvement in her reading fluency. Both have been working hard at getting her up to par.
Michelle personalizes the session based on the needs of the student. She is patient and explains things well. Our child has gone from a low D to a high C, almost a B- in just 6- 8 sessions. She is very professional.
I am an adult who recently tried to pass the CBEST test after only reviewing the material by myself. I did not pass the math section, partly because they do not allow calculators to be used and I don't remember how to do math longhand. I also realized that my overall math skills have not been used in over 40 years and are very rusty.
At our first appointment, Michelle was able to help me find a starting point for my studies. At the second appointment, Michelle helped me understand some areas of weakness that I need to work on. She is very skilled at pointing me in the right direction for my own individual study and practice, and makes our sessions most productive. I highly recommend Michelle as a tutor. She is very easy to work with, stays on track, understands the concepts and explains them clearly.
Update: Now that I have finished 10 sessions I am even MORE impressed with Michelle's skills! Meeting at the library was helpful because she was able to direct me to some math books and specific CBEST preparation books that helped me practice my new knowledge without having to spend more money on books. Every week we covered the material specifically needed for this test, so there was NO wasted time. Questions that seemed "silly" to me, because I couldn't figure out the answer myself, she quickly and professionally resolved and helped me feel more confident.
I am now ready to go and retake this test with much more knowledge and confidence! I can do Basic Math, Algebra, and some Basic Geometry all without the aid of a calculator. Word Problems?? No Problem!! I do highly recommend Michelle for anyone of any age who needs some extra help to unravel the mysteries of math. I passed with double my previous score!!! My confidence level has increased significantly. I am most pleased.
Michelle is a wonderful tutor. In such a short amount of time, she was able to find out the stumbling blocks my son was having with math, and by the end of the lesson, the frustration he had turned into smiles because he understood. It was amazing! She also worked with him on an English writing assignment. He was so frustrated that he didn't want to do the assignment. Michelle brainstormed with him on ideas, and then she showed him how to put his thoughts on paper. It was amazing his whole attitude toward writing the paper changed it went from frustration to excitement. As a parent, I can't tell you how happy I was I wanted to give her a big hug. She's really a wonderful tutor!
Michelle has been a blessing to my 7th grade daughter who went from failing her Math class to getting a high B! She picked up on my daughter's learning style, and has tailored sessions to meet her where she is. My daughter has a better understanding of the math concepts through Michelle's work with her, and is enjoying Math again. Michelle is patient, understanding, and insightful to underlying issues that might be interfering with her studies. She has gone above and beyond the tutoring, and has shown my daughter that she cares beyond just being a tutor. Michelle is awesome!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor students who have ADD/ADHD based on both my education and experience. I hold a valid multiple subject teaching credential. One class dealt specifically with teaching students with special needs, including those who have ADD or ADHD. Also, as a teacher I taught many students with ADD/ADHD and adapted my lesson plans to fit the needs of all students. Finally, I have tutored several students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. When tutoring, I utilize strategies that help students with attention deficit disorder become successful in the classroom.
I have earned a doctorate in plant pathology. Plant pathology involves the interaction between plants and their pathogens. Thus, I needed to be proficient in botany in order to do research and write my thesis. I learned botany both from college classes, talking with others, and reading the literature.
I am qualified to teach the CBEST because I have a multiple subject teaching credential. I have passed the CBEST and am familiar with the current version. I am very good at teaching both math and language arts. Also, I teach test taking strategies that are very important to standardized test taking.
I received a multiple subject teaching credential. Also, I have tutored many elementary students in all subjects. My students always improve in either one or multiple subjects as a result of tutoring. I have already passed the reading, writing, elementary math, elementary science, and study skills tests by wyzant.
I have written a thesis, and published in peer reviewed journals. Also, I earned a multiple subject credential.
In several of the classes for the multiple subject teaching credential I learned how to adapt lesson plans for students with students with special needs including those with learning disabilities and gifted students. Throughout my teaching and tutoring career I have effectively taught students with special needs.
I have been a tutor independently for the last two years and reinforce study skills with students. We go over test taking strategies such as underlining key words, and circling words such as "except" in the phrase "all of the words below are verbs except." I also stress using a planner and keeping an organized notebook. Another study tool I use with students is graphic organizers for prewrites. I teach students how to look for key terms when reading a history or science text and also how to answer questions at the end of the chapter. All of these tools help to make the student more successful in school. I also have earned a doctorate in plant pathology.
