For the past 14 years, I have taught public health education courses at San Francisco State University and also served as a writing coach for the Post Baccalaureate students in SFSU's pre-health professions program. Every semester, I guide students to critically think and prepare well written papers, not only to achieve higher grades, but to help them get ahead after college.

I have always been a skillful and talented writer, and over the years, have become an excellent copyeditor and proofreader.

On a personal level, I am a published author! My novel, "Ripple Effect" was published in several years back and happily, has received great review. It can be purchased at any local bookstore or on multiple online platforms, i.e., Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Ripple-Effect-Cathy-Rath/dp/1736090801/

My approach is to 'meet' clients where they are, help determine and prioritize personal goals, and then strategize the best way our time together can achieve their desired results. Be prepared to improve your writing skills and enjoy having a champion in your corner!(adhering to Chicago Style Guide) and a diplomatic approach to revising text submitted by school principals and teachers.

Grammar

Grammar

As a teacher, I am thrilled when a student submits a well written, grammatically correct paper. Unfortunately, many of my college-level students have either not been properly taught, or had too many challenges growing up to learn the components of basic English. I grade hundreds of papers every year, and feel compelled to edit my students’ work so their intended meaning is achieved. I am committed to offering personalized tutoring services to middle and high school-aged students that are struggling now with grammar so by the time they get to college, they will be confident writers and thinkers.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading, otherwise known as 'spell check', has been another under-utilized component of the writing process. Even after a few visual reviews, I explain to students that if they want to make sure there are no mistakes, they could ask someone with more writing expertise to read their paper, and/or if not available, read it out loud (slowly) so they might 'hear' mistakes, i.e., missed words or grammatically incorrect phrasing. This, again, is a skill I explain to students that they can develop over time based on more reading exposure and writing mastery. After many years as a copyeditor, it is difficult for me to read anything without my proofreading 'lamp' turned on. I enjoy helping students care about, and become more skillful in this essential writing practice.
Reading

Reading

Today, teaching students reading basics is becoming more advanced in large part, because of the tougher challenges young people have in maintaining focus and concentration. They didn't create this media-distracting world we live in, but are unfortunately experiencing the pitfalls. I warn students, for example, when articles or text will require extra time so they make a concerted effort to turn off electronic devices. I have also sought input from students on best reading and comprehension practices, and now have a 'tool kit' of strategies that improve concentration, including a customizable checklist of questions to 'answer' as they read through difficult assignments.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I earned my Master's degree in Education and currently teach health education courses at San Francisco State University. I prepare a compilation of reading material from scholarly publications, as well as popular literary sources. I invest a great deal of time and effort teaching students effective study skills to learn the proper usage of new vocabulary terms, and guide them in achieving their intended meaning. For example, in 1:1 tutoring sessions, I will ask students to deconstruct sophisticated language concepts by sharing their papers out loud, and stopping to have them explain what they wanted to convey. It is an empowering process where students end up correcting themselves.
Writing

Writing

This is both my passion and specialty! As I mentioned in my background, I am a writer who enjoys learning, and becoming better at my craft. I am also thrilled when I can help others express themselves either just as they intended, or even better than they ever thought they could. Proper sequencing and storytelling is both an art and science, so I combine these techniques working with students to achieve a consistent flow in their writing. It is difficult for me not to contain my joy when I see students transcend from 'I can't do it' to genuine pride in their finished product. From creating an idea, to preparing an outline, to editing drafts, I have and continue to help students become competent and confident writers.
