I am a Mill Valley resident and veteran educator with over 20 years of experience teaching high school Humanities. I’m currently opening a few select spots for 1:1 tutoring, specifically focused on writing and Humanities assignments (Grades 9–12, including AP Literature/Language).

I knew I wanted to become a teacher, so I double majored in English and English Education, then began teaching high school English right after college. I got my Master's Degree in Humanities Education because I wanted to design interdisciplinary classes. After teaching at a public high school in New York City, I worked at a charter high school in San Francisco. For the past eleven years, I've found a home at the Bay School of San Francisco.

Beyond designing curriculum and cultivating classroom communities, one of the things I love most about teaching is working 1:1 with students to help them prepare for tests or work on essays. I've learned a great deal about these topics not only as a teacher, but also as an Instructional Coach. For the past five years, I've worked 1:1 with teachers to hone their craft, I've done research and designed professional development workshops about how students learn best, and I've done countless classroom observations. This work has in turn made me a more effective teacher, and sets me apart as a tutor.

I offer both in-person sessions in Marin and San Francisco, and virtual sessions via Zoom. If you’re looking for a teacher and coach who can help you with your reading, writing, college essays, +/or test prep, I’d love to connect!

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have taught high school Humanities for 20 years, at every level from remedial 9th grade up to AP Literature. I have taught students in person and via Zoom, and have tutored in person with a primary focus on essay writing. I can help students in every phase of essay writing, from brainstorming, to writing an outline, writing claims, finding evidence, blending and analyzing that evidence, to final proofreading. I have strategies for helping them with both in-class and take-home essays. I can also teach them everything they need to know about grammar!
Grammar

Grammar

I have taught all levels of high school English, from remedial ninth grade to AP English Literature. I've taught students everything they need to know about grammar, from basic parts of speech up to varied syntax in essays. I've designed grammar quizzes, and helped students learn how to study for them. I have also been the Faculty sponsor for our school's writing and editing program for ten years, so I teach older students how to help younger students with their grammar.
Literature

Literature

I've been a high school Humanities teacher for twenty years, teaching a variety of literature and interdisciplinary classes. I have taught all grades, from remedial 9th grade up to AP Literature, and have helped students critically read all types of books, from graphic novels to Shakespeare. I help them learn how to annotate, how to identify literary devices, and how to construct arguments for both oral exams and essays (whether in-class or take-home). I also have many tools that help them discern the deeper themes in works of literature, as well as the literary devices that contribute to those themes. As an Instructional Coach, I've also learned a great deal about how students learn, and how to help struggling readers with evidence-based strategies.
