I passed the CSET subsection three and four because of his thorough teaching. He was very prepared, and he gave me the appropriate tools to succeed. He knows the structure of the test. He explains the concepts clearly and concisely. He was one of the best teachers that I have ever encountered.
Doug is a genuine and great tutor! I was able to connect with Doug easily and share with him areas that I want to work on.The session was productive and fund. I certainly look forward to our next meeting.
My 12 year old son really enjoys his lessons with Mr. K. He has been working with my son for over a year now. My son has been improving his writing skills and has written several short stories. Mr. K. is a very kind, talented and knowledgeable teacher. He suggests and encourages my son to read the classics. He has high standards for my son and checks the writing every week when they meet. I am very thankful we met him.
Mr. Douglas K. is a great tutor who is very helpful when it comes to English reading comprehension and writing. I've been working with him for the past two months now on SAT critical reading and my scores have improved a lot. My vocabulary has also improved thanks to the easy-to-remember definitions that he provides for me. He is also very friendly and knowledgeable in many academic fields. I would definitely recommend him as your tutor if you need help in English reading comprehension.
Douglas has been tutoring my son and daughter for the SAT test since the beginning of this summer. What I have observed about his method is that he describes the original root for each word which helps greatly to understand and remember the vocabulary. I had been looking for a tutor to work with my teenagers on English and I believe Douglas is preparing them for both the test and the use of the language in general. The other great thing about him is that my kids are having fun while learning from him. Douglas has a pleasant personality and I'm delighted with him as a tutor.
Mr. K. is very knowledgeable. He knows a lot about history and current events. He also understands the different points of views on a certain subject. Mr. K. gives information about interesting topics like the Battle of Gettysburg. I have been taking his classes for the whole summer.
Douglas knows what it takes to get a GREAT college personal statement. I asked him to help me with revising my college admission essays for UC Berkeley, and I got in! All thanks to his expertise with English grammar and insight to what colleges want when it comes to personal statements.
My child has been taking Latin lessons from Douglas for about a year. Since Latin was not offered at my child's school, my child started from scratch, and Douglas has been a very patient tutor. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. Learning Latin has helped my child a lot on English and Science as well. I have seen positive results so far. We would continue with the Latin lessons.
My son has been taking lessons with Douglas for about a year and he has grown much more confident in English. Douglas is very insightful and helpful, particularly with writing. He has helped my son improve in his essays and has also helped with SAT prep. I would recommend Douglas as a tutor to any parent whose child is struggling in his English class or needs help on SAT English.
Mr. K has been a profound tutor for my daughter for the past couple of weeks! I had been searching vigorously for a tutor who would provide excellent reading and writing tips. Not only did Mr. K fit all of these criteria, but he makes the class interesting with his wide range of knowledge which my daughter really enjoys! All in all, Mr. Douglas K is one of the best tutors I have encountered! I would definitely recommend him!
Douglas K. provides very useful tips for PSAT and explains every single problem in the test.
My son likes his tutoring very much. Highly recommend!
Studying the LSAT can be confusing. But I'm glad to have Douglas break down complex questions and making it easy. He helps me develop techniques and strategies that builds my confidence. Currently Douglas is still my regular tutor until October.
Mr. Douglas is cordial and makes a learning process an easygoing discussion. He has prepared for me many great examples to demonstrate his point when teaching me how to write. He is a great tutor in a sense that he persuades you with evidence. He starts from fundamental ideas and plants them in your mind well. Though expert at public speaking and general English, he may not be too eager to teach you how to raise your SAT writing. Yet he was insightful in his reasoning for not in favor of SAT writing.
I am a student of Doug, and I am very satisfied with the improvement I have made in my writing and English in general. In my SAT prep class, I used to receive 9 and 10s on my essays. Ever since I started class with Doug, my scores have been a consistent 12. I like the unique way he approaches writing and the vivid and well-written examples he chooses to show me. I find I learn something new every week, and after every new session I have a new challenge to tackle.
Cons: Douglas likes to talk on and on, so class tends to be longer than originally planned. However, this does expand the student's wealth of knowledge, so it may actually not be a bad thing.
I suggest that for the first class, the student should bring some samples of his/her writing to Doug so that he knows where to start.
Hire Douglas for your English tutor. You will not regret it.
My son was skeptical at first, after attending other tutors - But once he met Mr. Douglas he comes back and says he met the best tutor ever. He was able to communicate with him in his own way and the tutor would teach him in simple terms how to solve problems. He is looking forward continuing tutoring with him. Hats off to Mr. Douglas.
My son had problem with SAT critical reading part and I was looking for someone who can help him with that. Within a month my son's SAT score in critical reading part improved to 95% correct.
Douglas has been tutoring me ESL for a couple months, he was very knowledge of the language including the origins, speaking patterns, etc. The material, "American Accent Training", he selected for me was very helpful in correcting my pronunciation and intonation. He was very critical with any of my pronunciation mistakes, small or big, which is very good since I can learn in an error intolerated environment.
I feel very lucky to find Douglas as my English tutor. My English, while beyond the ESL level, is not as good as native English speakers. As a result it was difficult to find a tutor that met my level. Because Douglas was previously an Editor, he is really good at helping me improve my written English.
Douglas is also a good listener and he catches my errors and corrects me when I make any mistake in my spoken English. As a result I’m more confident and comfortable engaging in conversations with native English speakers, not only on work related matters, but also on other random topics.
This is the first time I've written this, but I think you are a great tutor. In just two months, you have helped me to improve my sentence structure, variation, consistency, organization, coherence, and clarity.
When I was looking for a Latin tutor, I came across only a few Latin teachers who were qualified to teach this subject. I was happy to find Douglas for my daughter who studied Latin in her previous school in London and wanted to continue learning in America.
Douglas is very helpful in terms of explaining to me and my daughter his lesson plans. He is always on time and well prepared for his lessons. He started tutoring my daughter with confidence and with in depth knowledge of the subject. Douglas definitely has a quality of a great teacher whose teaching style seems to convince every student, even my teenage daughter and keep her engaged and interested in Latin which is not an easy task. My daughter is happy to continue her lessons with him and, hopefully with Douglas' help, bring her knowledge of Latin to a high standard.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English borrows as much as 60% of its vocabulary from Latin. Learning Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes can multiple your English vocabulary, and help you to decipher words newly seen. A few Greek roots help too. Since few today study Latin or Greek in High School or College, an English tutor grounded in the classics can help you expand your vocabulary rapidly, focusing on the roots and words used in the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, and other key tests.
