Bio

I have experience as an advertising agency and corporate art director and as a college professor and tutor. I have tutored elementary students as well as college students and professional adults. Whatever age or point in development you are, if you have a real desire to learn we will begin the lessons at your level and I will guide you to success.

I do more tutoring now than art direction, and I've found I really enjoy when my students get what I'm teaching them. Not all of my students are artists or designers. I've enjoyed teaching students with a wide variety of backgrounds and goals. Tell me a little about yourself and your goals and I will teach you what you need to know about art, drawing, design and Adobe Creative Suite.

I have used Adobe Illustrator to create illustrations, logos, packaging designs and illustrations for a variety of companies. I've tutored the subject to college students with graphic design majors, architecture majors, business majors and to a professional calligrapher and graphic designer.

I've been an artist since I can remember. I studied art, graphic design and art direction for eight years of college, four at Kent State University in Ohio and four more at the Art Center College of Design in California. I took courses in web development at UCLA. I've kept many a sketchbook and used Adobe Photoshop, Animation, Graphic Design and Drawing for a lot of professional projects. I've also tutored students in drawing and all of these applications.

I usually tutor students online and at my studio location, the Manhattan Beach, CA library. They have private rooms with wifi and a pleasant view. I've also met students in local coffee shops. I've created illustrations, logos, package designs, patterns, , architectural renderings, Adobe Animate designs, and more. I'm a Creative Director, an Art Director and Senior Graphic Designer as well as a tutor. I use InDesign as my primary layout application for designing print advertisements and brochures as well as animated portfolios. I design and prepare pdf files ready to send to the printer. I've taught my students how to do this for their class projects and for their business projects. InDesign works well with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I've done image combinations, high end retouching, illustrations, logos and posters as well as actions, batching and multiple pdf files. I've also tutored students in the application who've been very satisfied with how quickly they were able to learn from the lessons.

I've used After Effects and Animation CC professionally to create banners, film inserts and promotions and as introductions for presentations. During my time at the Boeing Company, Inc. I used animation for some very large presentations. I've tutored professional designers and college students using this animation software along with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere.

People have often commented on my annunciation and proper usage of the language as an adult. It has also been an asset to my career. I sometimes write copy for advertisements.

I taught graphic design at Woodbury University. I've tutored students, from elementary through professional level online and in person. I've been an intricate part of marketing teams and created branding, logo design, campaigns, magazine and newspaper advertising, outdoor advertising, packaging, poster design, Powerpoint presentations, web design, social media ads, motion design with animation, banners, and illustrations. I once taught Illustration at a university, before returning to the world of corporate design and advertising. I've used oil paints, acrylics, gouache, airbrush, and watercolor. Currently, I'm expanding my painting experience through digital media. I look forward to teaching students digital painting and perhaps more online.

A great teacher and tutor

Katherine walked me through all the steps of setting up an InDesign document and preparing it for print. I had no experience on that app and just a bit of knowledge from Illustrator. She was patient and open minded to accompany any of my ideas and processes.
