I have always been a lover of learning with a particular passion for literature and language arts. I graduated magna cum laude from UCLA in 1979 with a B.A. in English and earned English Departmental Honors, Additionally, I hold a Paralegal Certificate from the UCLA Attorney Assistant Program, and worked for many years as a legal assistant drafting, revising and editing legal documents and correspondence. I am also accredited by the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) as an academic tutor. I am particularly proficient with editing, grammar, proofreading and all forms of literary thematic analysis, and am fluent in both MLA and APA style formatting.

I am also the mother of three accomplished children, ages 27, 24 and 18. Over the course of the last 25 years, I have been consistently actively involved in their education, providing "in-house" tutoring in all subjects, reinforced each year by repeating the extremely challenging curricula presented at their college preparatory school.

As a tutor, I strive to challenge students academically to encourage them to achieve, while my experience as a parent makes me particularly sensitive to seeking an appropriate individual approach rather than adopting a "one size fits all" mentality.

Specifically, I have consistently aided students in achieving success by reviewing, analyzing and editing coursework and essays in such subjects as AP English, AP Psychology, Spanish, and SAT/ACT Test preparation. I also have extensive experience with brainstorming, revising and editing college admissions and law school essays. I can help you craft a paper from scratch, or edit and polish your nearly-complete work.

My approach to facilitating students' learning has been to review and analyze their course material with them, discover the areas in which they are having difficulty, and then reframe the problem in such a way that it is clearer and easier to understand. I find this process to be a highly effective learning strategy by encouraging students to think critica

I am currently tutoring a college-level high-functioning autistic student in English through the Wyzant program He is bright but limited by his lack of use of language. I work with him to help him expand his ideas linguistically by providing cues and prompts that help him come up with ideas that help him give a voice to his thoughts. We are a good working team and I am excited to see him through his college expository English class! Knowledgeable and amazing tutor

Beverly is an absolute professional! She has been tutoring my 12-year-old daughter for a few months now in preparation for the Academic Decathlon in which she will be competing in Literature. Beverly is not only knowledgeable in the subject matter, she has an amazing ability to connect with my daughter and make the lessons age-appropriate and easy to understand. She is passionate about her work and about teaching, and she goes above and beyond what is asked of her. For example, Beverly showed up to the first tutoring session with a copy of the novel that my daughter is reading and will be getting quizzed on. She took initiative and came prepared, and this immediately gave us the confidence that she is the perfect tutor for the “job”. Beverly is teaching my daughter to think critically, to dive deeper, to ask questions, and to look at things from different perspectives. Not only does my daughter demonstrate increased comprehension and improved analytical skills, she genuinely enjoys her time with Beverly and looks forward to her weekly sessions. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us, Beverly!
