Some more about me:
I started as a Finance major in undergrad, during which I devised and testing trading strategies. Upon graduating in 2009, I began a post-baccalaureate in health sciences and worked at UCSF as a researcher for a year, then worked at Amgen for 4 more years. During this time, I volunteered as a tutor and senior college advisor at College Track San Francisco. While in graduate school for earning a PhD in Bioinformatics, I built a thriving STEM tutoring business. This also allowed me to take a break from my professors and thesis advisors.

I am currently a full time scientist, but when time permits, I still enjoy working with students to help them gain mastery of subjects in STEM.

Contact me to set a tutoring appointment, and I'll work with you to meet your academic goals.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

For over 10 years, I have been tutoring and mentoring students with ADHD in STEM subjects. My clients have ranged in age from mIddle school to senior (citizen), though most of my experience are ADHD students in either high school or undergraduate programs. To build a scaffold for success with your student : 1) build rapport, 2) set goals/expectations, 3) establish a schedule, and 4) work towards big projects with small manageable steps. These steps have led my most successful clients to get out of their academic rut to pass big tests, complete courses with pride, earn degrees, and even land a jobs.
Biology

Biology

My combined 6 years of professional experience in biology -- from academic labs at UCSF (medical microbiology), industrial labs at Amgen (genetics-based target discovery), and in my current PhD work (bioinformatics) -- qualifies me as a content expert in biology. I specialize in molecular biology topics and techniques (biotechnology), but I can also help with "macro" topics varying from population genetics to ecology. I also placed in the 96th percentile for the biological sciences section of the MCAT, which speaks to my varied understanding of all things biology.
Chemistry

Chemistry

The basis of my personal and professional interest (biological science) lies Chemistry. Apart from earning all "A"s in Chem 1, Chem 2, OChem 1, Ochem 2, and Biochemistry, I also had to employ my understanding of chemistry in a research setting. Optimizing DNA preps, developing RNA synthesis, and performing biosensor tech development, all required a solid understanding of chemistry topics from inorganic chemistry (stoichiometry, acid/base, electrochemistry) to organic chemistry (redox reactions, polymers, synthesis).
College Counseling

College Counseling

With over ten years of experience guiding students through the college admissions process, I bring a proven record of helping diverse students, including first-generation college applicants, navigate their path to top universities such as USC, Duke, and UC Berkeley. My work at College Track, where I’ve volunteered for four years, has honed my ability to provide strategic application planning, essay feedback, and personalized support. Additionally, I have supported community college students in developing transfer plans to further their academic journeys. My approach includes developing comprehensive application strategies, providing detailed feedback on essays and applications, and working collaboratively with parents and school staff to ensure every aspect of the application process is seamless and thorough. With a PhD from UC Santa Cruz and teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels, I am deeply committed to fostering student success and ensuring they have the resources to thrive.
Data Science

Data Science

I graduated with a PhD in Bioinformatics (data science for biology) in 2019, and currently work as a bioinformatics/data scientist in industry. My day-to-day work typically uses both python and R, with all associated data-science and statistical packages to tackle difficult problems. Most of what I work on is biological/genomic data, but I have tutored many students and professionals in a wide range of industries and domains.
Genetics

Genetics

My combined 5 years experience in cancer genomics -- both in industrial drug discovery and in my current PhD work -- qualifies me as a content expert in genetics. From Mendelian to molecular genetics, denovo sequencing to personalized medicine: I am ready to bolster your understanding of nearly all things genomic.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel and I go way back. My first introduction to Excel was a using it as a graphing program for a middle school science project. I continued using it throughout high school and college for both school assignments and personal use. Excel continued to be my go-to spreadsheet solution for analyzing scientific data as a biology research professional, which often employed the use of VBA scripts to automate jobs.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

MS Outlook was my part of my everyday email needs from 2004 to 2014, both personally and professionally. I can tutor topics ranging from basic message editing, to mailbox organization, to automation (with a little help in VBA). I can help you handle your email correspondence like a pro.
Python

Python

I use Python as an engineering grad student to explore "big data" questions applied to cancer genetics. Before starting grad school, I had no experience with programming and had to become proficient quickly in order to survive a graduate program in Bioinformatics. Coming from a non-CS background makes me well equipped to tutor and teach python to students from other fields. Namely, I'm qualified to teach the basics the Python, as well as more advanced libraries like pandas, seaborn, and sklearn. The way I self-teach via "learning by doing": tackling small coding projects that provide a guided learning experience and provide a portfolio of python work.

Human textbook 📕

So nice to have someone who fully understand the concepts and is able to explain every question my kid had. It really makes a difference to feel confident that your questions will be explained in a way that makes things easier to understand.

Professional, Thorough and Versatile

Thomas aided and increased my understanding in the Python programming subject. Thomas was easy to understand with his use of applied metaphors, analogies and visual aids. I was introduced to the fundamentals in Python. I gained an understanding of Anaconda and notebooks such as Jupyter. We covered values, functions, methods, tuples and an array of basics in Python language programming.

Excellent Tutor!

My son had regular sessions with Thomas for grade 11 AP Bio and it was extremely helpful. He is a diverse young man who easily connected with my son on many different levels, which also made the sessions fun. He not only effectively taught the biology but also study and testing strategies. Thomas is very pleasant, flexible with his schedule, and always got back to me quickly, which I appreciated with a busy teenager. We are already booked to continue with Thomas for senior year and college planning. I would not hesitate to recommend him.
