I was CEO and founder of an education company that, over the course of ten years, worked with 30+ school districts and taught approximately 10,000 students. I trained our staff of 50+ tutors to focus on holistic growth (critical thinking skills and inter/intrapersonal intelligence). As well as my executive and college counseling experience, I have taught writing, literary and film analysis, and test prep. for the last twenty years, utilizing the knowledge gained studying Literature and Screenwriting (a handy melding of academia and craft) at UCLA. I currently own a shared creative workspace in Los Angeles that hosts a community of writers and creatives from various fields; talking about the art of storytelling in a fun but meaningful way is second nature to me.

My teaching style is more "Dead Poets Society" and "School of Rock" than Ivy League. I teach my students that nothing is guaranteed or safe, but if they find a subject or craft that they're passionate about and put in the work, they'll find success in some form or fashion. Control the things that you can (gaining knowledge and skills, effort, self-awareness) and ignore the things that you can't (grades, jobs, social perception)--principled pragmatism.

Random facts: I've coached high school basketball, I'm a classically trained pianist, backyard trained BBQ pit master, three-time fantasy football champion, professional life coach and amateur magician. I've also taught personality typing (how to "read" people and understand yourself) for over twenty years, lecturing on the topic at schools such as UC Riverside and Otis College of Art and Design.

If you're looking for help in any of the aforementioned/promoted/humble-bragged-about skills (or other subjects Wyzant has seen fit to deem me qualified) do not hesitate to send out the Bat-signal (I see myself as Michael Keaton, but unfortunately, I'm probably more Adam West).

Career Development

I've studied, practiced, taught, and written about personality-typing for the last twenty five years. During much of that time, I've used those people-reading methods to better understand the individual needs and skills of a countless number of students, and in the form of college counseling and life coaching, encouraged them to follow their passions wherever they may lead. In addition, as CEO of a tutoring company, I designed lesson plans for around a thousand students a year, all based on the same process as I would use with my own students.

Common Core

As CEO of an education company, I was responsible for coordinating partnerships with 30+ school districts. One of the requirements was ensuring that all of our curriculum was matched to Common Core standards and that our teachers were trained in the necessary methods of instruction. I also created approximately a thousand student learning plans a year based on Common Core.
Film

Film

I studied screenwriting at UCLA, one of the top film schools in the world. For the last twenty years, I have been teaching students how to analyze narrative and thematic elements within a film, and how to construct story arcs for their own work. I have also been a member of a small, tight-knit feedback group of screenwriters and TV writers, so I am extremely familiar with the creative process at all stages of development (concept, macro notes, punching up lines, etc.)

He will help you get your life together

Eric is very skilled at inspiring critical thought and reflection. He exemplifies how one can enjoy what you do without having to compromise your values and preferences. He thoroughly understands the array of career options that exist and is skilled at identifying which might be a good match based on one’s personality and skill set. He breaks down complicated and anxiety inducing decisions into logical and practical ones. He has helped me to identify what I need for my work to be fulfilling and meaningful. I feel more confident and motivated from this lesson. He’s funny and chill and helped me stop being so hard on myself while moving me to action. I recommend him to anyone who feels lost about their future or who simply wants to level up and become a better version of themselves.

Dedicated and Caring Tutor. College Essays to Film Writing.

Eric is a dedicated tutor who is passionate about growing curiosity and creativity in students. He is really perceptive and guides students to be more comfortable with their learning journey. I first reached out to Eric become a better writer as a former ESL student. He was able to quickly understand how I learn and created personalized learning exercises. In time, I was able to perform exceptionally well in classes and am now determined to become a poet one day. Eric has also helped with my college papers, and I was able to get into top private universities and UCs with his expertise. His love for writing is infectious and his advice never really leaves you. It stays until you write something real.

Thoughtful, dedicated and passionate teacher!

Eric's teaching methods are great. Very clear and concise. Doesn’t waste your time explaining meaningless background information. He's really great at building confidence and keeping the lesson fun and engaging through a variety of activities that improved my screenwriting skills, specifically for action lines as requested.
