Hi there! I'm Matt, a full-time professional tutor and homeschool teacher. I spend my days driving around Los Angeles with a classroom in the back of my car to bring fun, hands-on learning to your door.

My style emphasizes games, project-based learning, content mastery and academic rigor. I incorporate my students' interests into their learning and tailor lessons directly to their needs. Imagine your student reading sci-fi literature, writing their own fantasy novel, or playing princess board games on break.

The classroom in the back of my car includes everything from math manipulatives (think abacus, math card games, and rubber band geometry boards) to writing workbooks and novels for every grade level. Of course, there are board games, toys, magnets, stickers, and assorted office supplies to help keep students engaged and organized throughout the session.

My students are diverse. About half have learning differences or struggle academically. Many have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), dyslexia, ADHD, or challenges with executive functioning. For these students, I am trained to improve organization, social skills and emotional regulation.

The rest of my students include gifted homeschoolers, preschoolers, kindergartners, kids in elementary school, middle school and high school, as well as college students and adults. In addition to my academic offerings, I offer extracurricular activities like chess classes and Dungeons and Dragons gaming groups.

As for me, I own my own business, Branch Out School, LLC. My background includes graduate education at UCLA, six years of work at the UCSF autism program, and a BA in Psychology, Spanish, and Chinese from New College of Florida. I am a co-author on several papers in academic neuroscience and neurodevelopment. On a Fulbright to Taiwan, I was awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award for my work abroad.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked with students with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and general special needs and learning differences for 10+ years now. This experience includes clinical and assessment work at a medical university, basic neuroscience research, and spending the past two years homeschooling and tutoring k-12 and college students. I focus on organization, executive functioning, and challenging behaviors while also using reward and schedule boards to motivate students. I have many strategies I can use with students (timers, reminder apps, calendaring, planners), and also organizational programs I recommend to parents. I typically start with parent and student questionnaires to gather data about their strengths and weaknesses in organizational skills. Recent successes include: academic support for a seventh grader with ADHD and dyslexia, tutoring a seventh grader with ASD and ADHD, and support for various high school and college students needing help staying organized and getting focused so they can finish their advanced coursework.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring and teaching math for eight years. In high school, I completed AP Calculus. After college, I completed the full pre-medical curriculum. Currently, I tutor as low as pre-school and kindergarten math and as high as algebra 1 for college and high school students. With my students, I work to make math as engaging as possible. I emphasize full mastery of foundational skills before moving on to harder content. I engage students with hands-on tools, conceptual lessons and as many practice problems as they need to master the content. I have dozens of math manipulatives in my car: abacus, math card games, fraction boards, rubber-band geoboards, math balance, etc. Most recently, I homeschooled a student from elementary math through Algebra I. Though he started behind, he placed into a math class two years above grade level in high school when he moved on to in-person school. Other recent successes include tutoring algebra I to two separate college students at risk of failing who ultimately passed their classes.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Since 2020, I have worked for about 25 hours a week homeschooling and tutoring students on the ASD spectrum. Before that, I worked in the Autism research and clinical care program at UCSF for six years after studying language development and psychology in undergrad. In class, I meet my students with schedule boards, as well as games and activities that match their interests (Sci-Fi, Disney princesses, boats, trains, etc). I emphasize mastery of content and meeting the student with ASD where they are at, including activities to improve social skills, cool down our bodies and brains when we are upset, and get organized. Most importantly, I work to build a strong, friendly relationship with the student so they they trust me and genuinely enjoy our time together.
Chess

Chess

I did an independent study project for a month with a physics professor in college after learning to play chess with my dad at a young age. Since, I played regularly in competitive arenas (ICC, chess.com) and have also joined a local LA chess club. I'm happy to teach students learning to play chess who are getting their feet wet at an introductory or low intermediate level. I have taught chess in elementary homeschool and in some small groups of new players.
Common Core

Common Core

I have taught common core English and math curricula for elementary through high school students for two years total. My students include those with ADHD, autism and other learning disorders. I have several books in my library related to common core standards and use them quite regularly for my tutoring and homeschooling cases.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have worked in the field of special needs, ADHD and autism professionally for 10+ years now. Several of my students have dyslexia and I use a few different curricula to support them: Orton-Gillingham, All About Reading, step-by-step phonics and hand signals/annotations for difficult letters and phonemes. My experience includes clinical and assessment work at a medical university, basic neuroscience research, and spending the past two years homeschooling and tutoring special needs students. Recent successes include homework and academic support for a seventh grader with dyslexia, homeschooling a student with ASD, and helping college and high school students stay organized and focused to finish their advanced coursework.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been homeschooling and tutoring elementary school students for eight years, which includes a Fulbright fellowship teaching at a public school abroad. Imagine board games and laughter, as well as rigorous, mastery-based learning so that your student excels. Do they enjoy reading sci-fi or playing princess board games? Even break time can be fun and educational. I make heavy use of hands-on tools, such as math manipulatives (think abacus, math card games, a math balance) and reward/schedule boards. My car has a miniature classroom in its trunk full of games and activities for young children. Recent successes include teaching pre-schoolers and kindergartners to read and write and homeschooling a gifted young girl from second grade through fourth grade (soon to be fifth!). When it comes to tutoring, I often support students online or in their home to help them complete their homework and catch up on assignments. After homework is complete, I use any remaining time for supplemental learning, either by pursuing academic content the student is interested in or focusing on academic skills they need to improve. Whether in person or online, I have a variety of games I use, especially for longer sessions where brain breaks are necessary.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have been tutoring and teaching math for eight years. My car is full of dozens of math manipulatives: abacus, balance, rubber-band geoboard, math card games, fake money, fraction charts, etc. I own various tutoring and homeschool curricula that I use regularly (Rightstart Math and Saxon are two of my favorites). I'm also very familiar with popular online math programs like Zearn, IXL, and i-Ready. With my students, I work to make math as engaging as possible. I emphasize full mastery of foundational skills before moving on to harder content. I engage students with hands-on tools, conceptual lessons and as many practice problems as they need to master the content. I teach math up through Algebra I. Currently, I tutor as low as pre-school and kindergarten math and as high as algebra 1 for college and high school students. Most recently, I homeschooled a student from elementary math through Algebra I. Though he started behind, he placed into a math class two years ahead in high school. Other recent successes include tutoring three seventh graders in math, and a preschooler in first numbers.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I worked for six years in academic psychiatry and neuroscience. During that time, I started working as a tutor and homeschool teacher. With a pre-medical training background and extensive professional experience in academic biology and laboratory work, I not only bring fun, hands-on project-based science to my tutoring and homeschool students, but I also give them a feel for what it looks like to have a real career in science like I had. I have various curricula that I like to use, and one of my favorites in Science Odyssey for elementary school and middle school. What I love about it is that about half the content is projects. Imagine making a life-size model of me anatomy poster over the course of the year with 3D components hanging off of it, or studying diffusion in water with food coloring, or using a high-end microscope to look at slides we made in class together. Other projects have included doing wildlife observations at the Ballona Wetlands, making models of the atom with food, and making booklets with the most important data and diagrams for the most abundant elements. I have taught chemistry, biology and physics for elementary and middle school. Recently, I went through an AP biology textbook with an advanced eighth grader. I have supervised a stem-cell science laboratory class in south LA for summer-school learners and been a lead teacher in science summer camps.
English

English

My English instruction spans preschool through college writing, including personal statements and college applications. I am a lifelong language learner (Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese), which informs my love of language when I teach. Whether it's first writing, first reading, or editing a college dissertation, I have ample experience teaching ELA of all levels in my homeschool and tutoring work. My 100-page honors college thesis is a testament to my background in writing, particularly scientific writing. I am also a co-author on several peer reviewed neuroscience publications from my time at UCSF. The classroom in the back of my car comes equipped with a five-level program for beginning readers and spellers. I also have various workbooks to teach core writing skills, like paragraph writing, essay writing, transitions, essay organization and creative writing. There are also dozens of novels, including classics like Brave New World and To Kill a Mockingbird, in addition to various Newbery Medal picks, like The Giver, so that I can pick the right ones for my younger learners. Whenever my student's read novels, they flag themes, motifs, metaphors, character development and elements of the plot with sticker tabs as we read. At the end, they have an annotated novel where it is easy to find quotes to write their essays. This also encourages active reading, improves retention, makes reading fun, and invites us to have extensive discussion in class. Writing instruction includes everything you can imagine, from elementary school students writing their own fantasy novel to writing compare and contrast, synthesis and literary-analysis compositions in college. I've also supported students in writing college applications and personal statements. Importantly, I place a huge emphasis on ensuring the writing is the student's own words. I offer many ideas and suggestions, including sentence starters, topic changes, rigorous edits, and of course complete rewrites when necessary. But helping students with writing is
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I began teaching English in college as a volunteer for a Literacy Council that certified me in ESL instruction. I led an ESL course for Hispanic adults for one year using my Spanish ability to help me teach. I am also fluent in French and Mandarin, which I have used in other tutoring cases. In China and Taiwan, I taught English for several summers and worked in a public elementary school teaching English for one year. Currently, I am teaching ESL of all levels for adults seeking an associate's degree at a learning institute. As an avid language learner (Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese) I bring a rich and informed experience the world of learning English as a second language.

Grammar

Grammar

In my career, I became fluent in Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese. In college, I reached advanced levels where I read literature in the original in all three languages. That said, grammar is one of my favorite subjects to teach and I have tons of fun with it. While grammar may be boring to many, I love to make it fun, interesting and understandable. It is not as hard as many make it out to be.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I teach handwriting using various curricula, including Handwriting Without Tears and All About Spelling. Depending on the age of the student, we start with simple activities like squeezing tough putty or handling hard wooden blocks. Sometimes I recommend students do simple climbing walls at a local gym to improve hand strength. When the student is ready, we move on to proper posture and pencil grip, then to letter writing. Students who struggle or are resistant my start with only a few letters a day, but eventually they will be writing full essays by hand. I put special emphasis on making writing fun: think writing letters in sand, making letters out of play doh, and using coloring as a baseline task to develop fine motor skills. I've even taught cursive and dabbled in calligraphy for some of my homeschool students.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I offer comprehensive, premium homeschool services in Los Angeles. Homeschooling is my favorite way to teach because I can tailor the coursework exactly to a given student's level and thus help them achieve significant gains academically. I have a variety of rigorous curricula I use in K-12 math, English, science, Spanish, history and social studies that I use with my students. I further incorporate hands-on projects each week: imagine a life-size model-of-me anatomy board with 3D pieces, a hand-painted Chinese history scroll, a red, white and blue timeline of American history, a homemade board game, a trifold presentation on Jim Crow and segregation, or even a fantasy story written at home. Some cases I see 10 to 20 hours a week, which leaves us time for monthly field trips all around LA: Science Center, African American history museum, La Brea Tar Pits, Discovery Cube Los Angeles, Griffith Observatory, The Valley Hive beekeeper courses, you name it! Whether the student is in kindergarten or 12th grade, I incorporate their interests into the coursework, particularly for ELA reading and writing. For math, I teach up through Algebra I and include manipulatives of all sorts (abacus, math card games, rubber-band geoboards). Even break time is filled with board games and arts and crafts to keep it stimulating. Lastly, I also teach homeschool Spanish, and my past two homeschool cases are quite versed in the language now. Recent successes include a comprehensive homeschool program (13 hrs a week) with a gifted young girl, starting in second grade and now in fourth grade; a comprehensive homeschool program (20 hours a week) with a gifted boy with autism, fifth grade through eighth grade until they successfully returned to in-person school in high school.

Personal Statements

Personal Statements

In my personal life, I have successfully applied to various competitive academic programs: Fulbright, Gilman Scholarships, Critical Language Scholarship, Harvard Masters of Education, UCLA, and Goldman at Berkeley come to mind. I also have a 100+ page honors dissertation and several published papers in neuroscience that I am co-author on. With my students, I approach essay writing and personal statements from many angles. My bookshelf includes several titles I love, including "100 Successful College Application Essays." I like this entry especially because it shows a wide diversity of writing styles that I can share with my students, including some that are more creative and colorful, and others that are more scientific. Each session, we view one or discuss one that the student reads for homework in order to help encourage them to think about how they can make their personal statement or college application successful. I also sometimes share successful essays of my own to various competitive programs to add to the discussion. Of course, the writing work is where we get down to business. I place a huge emphasis on ensuring the writing is the student's own words. I offer many ideas and suggestions, including sentence starters, topic changes, rigorous edits, and of course complete rewrites when necessary. But helping students with writing is always a balance of ensuring that the writing is true to the student. This is because I believe the best writing is genuine and authentic, even if a student is receiving my support and feedback. Recent successes include helping a homeschool student of mine apply and gain acceptance to an MFA program and helping a lawyer write a cover letter for their first job in the legal profession.
Phonics

Phonics

I have taught many children how to read, including preschoolers who did not know their letters. I use various curricula, but my favorite is the Orton-Gillingham based All About Reading curriculum with its heavy emphasis on phonics. My students get a rigorous and comprehensive approach to reading that will teach them to be strong, independent readers in a few years time. Of course, my approach makes heavy use of games, colorful stories that make kids laugh, and hands-on activities like making letters in sand or out of play doh. Students will go through hundreds of fun hands-on activities, and early learners will learn to love my Ziggy the Zebra puppet.

I recently homeschooled 2nd grade through 4th grade, 5th grade through 8th grade, and 10th grade through 12th grade. The topics in our ELA courses have ranged from sci-fi to superhero squirrels and women in history. Writing includes everything you can imagine, from writing your own fantasy novel to writing compare and contrast, synthesis and literary-analysis compositions. I also place some emphasis on improving vocabulary and grammar in addition to reading and writing.
Spanish

Spanish

I mastered Spanish in high school and college, including work in literature and translation. I have been certified as a Spanish-to-English translator and received a C1 proficiency certification in Buenos Aires. I have worked with many students learning Spanish: recent successes include helping an 11th grade girl succeed in intensive online Spanish III over the summer, helping a sophomore through online Spanish II, and homeschooling elementary and middle school students in Spanish language.
Special Needs

Special Needs

Since 2020, I have worked for about 25 hours a week homeschooling and tutoring students on the ASD spectrum. Before that, I worked in the Autism research and clinical care program at UCSF for six years after studying language development and psychology in undergrad. In class, I meet my students with schedule boards, as well as games and activities that match their interests (Sci-Fi, Disney princesses, boats, trains, etc). Spelling

Spelling

I make use of rigorous, comprehensive curricula to teach spelling, particularly All About Spelling and All About Reading. Students can go from never having written a letter to being a better speller than most adults over the course of a few years in my tutoring or homeschool classroom. My approach includes flashcards, spelling tests, and various hands-on games. For younger kids, this can be writing letters in sand or making them out of play doh. For older students, they will get experience writing anything and everything, including essays and even their own fantasy novels.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I gained a behavioral and psychological approach to organizational skills at UCSF, where I worked for 6+ years. I have been supporting students with study skills for 10+ years. Sometimes these sessions are simple 30-minute online meetings, and other times they involve support with homework, classwork and organization in person. My executive functioning support includes calendaring, notification apps, pomodoro timer sessions with logs, planning out projects and to-do lists, study skills, organization and even simple relaxation techniques. I have some questionnaires for parents and students if they want to discuss areas they want to improve or goals they have. Of course, positive talk and compassion go without saying. Recent successes include homework and academic support for a seventh grader with dyslexia, homeschooling a student with ASD, and helping college and high school students stay organized and focused to finish their advanced coursework.

Wonderful Special needs Student, Writing, ADHD, Autism tutor!

MY child is on the spectrum, has ADHD and although he graduated high School with an Academic award, he was struggling with College writing, which is his weakest subject. My child was getting really far behind on a paper that was due, he was utilizing the resources the College offered but it wasn't enough. Matt was very flexible scheduling time with my child and he commited alot of hours for getting my childs paper done. My child has felt soooo much better now having Matt is his court ! He has been great at communicating with me via text. Matt has also be understanding with the challenges my child faces and has made great progress with him in a short time! Do Not hesitate to use Matt!

Unbelievably Thankful for Matthew!

Matthew has literally been a godsend for our family. My son had fallen behind academically (in all subjects - math, English, Spanish, history, and science) and was having other behavioral issues when Matthew started tutoring my son. But now, my son is actually ahead academically and Matthew has helped him learn executive function and emotional regulation skills that are have given him the tools he needs to manage and succeed at school. We are unbelievably thankful for Matthew.

Very experienced and thoughtful teacher

A clear step above other teachers we have met - he is not just teaching curriculum, he is spending a lot of time to understand our daughter’s interests and personality, as well as bringing some creativity in customizing curriculum, to the table. We expect this can help our little one develop of love of learning rather than just drilling curriculum.

Patient, efficient

Went slow for me to understand. Did not rush, and was very patient with me. I also liked how he showed me multiple ways to get an answer.

Personalized and knowledgeable

We had our first session and were super impressed with Matthew's ability to build a good relationship, explain material in different ways, and outline a future plan to meet our child's needs. We look forward to more sessions.

The BEST tutor for special needs

Matthew is an absolute gem of a tutor and human being. He has been working with my autistic 12-year-old-son for about five months now on homework. From day one, Matthew came prepared with tools that would keep my son focused and on task, and he always makes the learning upbeat and positive. He has a calm demeanor which is so welcome in our home, is laser focused on the task at hand, and is incredibly intelligent, responsible and dependable. We work with other tutors on the days that Matthew is unavailable, and I can always count on Matthew's days to be the most productive of the week. He is a great listener and truly cares about his students, and puts a lot of thought into each student's needs while offering intelligent and thoughtful suggestions. It is no wonder he has such a tremendous following, as he is filling such a huge need in successfully helping students with complex learning challenges. We hope to continue to work with Matthew for a long time!

Makes learning so fun for my 5 year old!

My 5 year old is slower on his recognition of letters/numbers and easily distracted, and we wanted to find a tutor that came to our house regularly and made learning fun for him. We found that in spades in Matt! My kiddo looks forward to his visit (which is more than I can say for school). Matt is constantly thinking up innovative ways to make learning fun for him - taking into account his obsession with Transformers and robots and superheroes, using sidewalks and chalk to turn math into a hopscotch game, etc. So thankful we found Matt!

My son met with Matt once (so far) and he already implements most, if not all, of what Matt taught him. Matt has a way of communicating that made my son feel like they were partners in the process. Glad to have found him.

really solid executive function trainer

Our son is super bright with ADHD and executive function difficulties. Matthew is doing more than assist with staying on track with homework, he is helping our 16 yr old find tools so he’ll be able to do this on his own.
