About Aubrey

Bio

Hi there! I'm Aubrey. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas State University, majoring in theatre with a minor in mathematics. I always joke that I'm the perfect combination of left- and right-brained skills, so I can teach math to theatre kids and creative thinking to the numbers people. This holistic approach to learning is a strength I bring to my work as a tutor, as I strive to encourage my students not only as mathematicians but as learners and as people.

Hi there!

I have noticed that lots of people run into a mental block with math because it has a reputation as a difficult subject, but I think that anyone can be a "math person"! It is always rewarding for me when students I work with say things like, "Wow, that wasn't so hard after all." What I love most about tutoring is the ability to empower my students by helping them discover their own capabilities.

I was a Supplemental Instructor (which is like a tutor in a group setting) at my university for four semesters, specializing in Differential Equations. This job involved attending the class lectures, writing accompanying lesson plans to deepen and cement students' understanding, and holding tutoring sessions where I could challenge the students with engaging activities. I also held office hours to help individual students, which also made me a better tutor: I learned how to explain one concept in lots of different ways, and how to identify struggle points for a particular student. I am now going on three years of experience as a private tutor for students at all levels of math.

My aim as a tutor is to be empathetic, engaging, and professional at all times. I am flexible with my methodologies and always open to feedback or suggestions from students and parents, in order to provide the best possible experience for my learners. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions or would like to schedule a lesson. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am in my fifth year of tutoring at all levels of math, including Algebra 1. I have experience working in both individual and group settings. My minor in college was pure mathematics, so I have a holistic view of the subject and how it fits together with other topics.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have 3 years of experience tutoring college math, and earned a math minor in my undergrad. My coursework included Elementary Number Theory, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Numerical Analysis. I am currently tutoring several students in Algebra 2, so I am able to stay caught up on the most recent curriculum.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I am in my third year of tutoring math students from 4th grade through college. I’ve been trained in Bloom’s Taxonomy as a framework for planning lessons, and one of my top skills is explaining a topic in many different ways to make it easy for any student to understand.
Theater

Theater

I have completed four years of training from one of the top acting programs in the US, as well as training from Yale University's Summer Conservatory, the Royal Shakespeare Center Birthplace Trust, and the Globe Theatre. I have studied in detail text analysis, heightened language (particularly Shakespeare), movement, voice and voice acting, and the techniques of several teachers, including Meisner and Bogart. I bring to the table more than ten years of experience as a theatre actor and served as a monologue coach for my peers throughout college.

Thank you Adel! I'm glad to hear you felt good about the first session. I appreciate your feedback!

Highly skilled, confident and encouraging.

Aubrey and I worked on college algebra and pre-calculus. She was extremely helpful, walking me through the work while broadening my understanding of the material. Her style laid back but authoritative; keeping pace with my learning ability but also challenging me to think deeper about the language of math. She helped me understand concepts that had previously eluded me. I highly recommend her. 5 Stars. Thank you Aubrey!
