I tutored Chinese to my sons ever since they were in second grade in a native Chinese school in Beijing. (now they are in high school and speak Chinese fluently). Their teacher gave them an award at the end of the year for showing the most improvement in Chinese in one year.
While working in Beijing for five years as a translator and tour guide for tourists who visited China, I did simultaneous translation between Chinese and English. I helped translate for Americans, British, Australians, French, Italians, and Germans. Most of them liked Chinese food, culture, and art, and needed someone who could communicate fluently with Chinese. They told me again and again that having a knowledge of more than one language and culture helped them to be more open-minded, and to see the world from different perspectives.
I also tutored foreigners who were working at the various embassies in Beijing, or who were teaching English in Beijing, and who needed to greatly increase their fluency in speaking Mandarin Chinese.
