Hello! My name is Garrett and I want to help you make beautiful music! I graduated with honors from both Citrus College as well as California State University Northridge and have been focusing on performing and writing music alongside teaching private lessons for almost a decade. Coming up through college I loved performing and have been fortunate to play with some great acts throughout the years (Mild High Club, NIKI, Barbara Morrison, Melissa Manchester, Tantamount Orchestra), helping to add my own personal flavor to various artists projects both in a live setting and in the recording studio. surprised to find that while I wouldn't want to teach a full class of students, I really enjoyed by one-on-one private lessons.

The biggest surprise that was in store for me in college for the love that I found in teaching my private students. I had never held a desire to teach at any point before, however once I began teaching a friend the basics of saxophone as a birthday gift I found it to be extremely rewarding to see another person discover their love of playing music in part because of me. Perhaps it's a bit egocentric, but I feel immense pride in saying that I have been able to help steer multiple students into various honor bands over the years.

With 3 degrees in various music fields, I have been put through the academic ringer and have come out with a wide array of exercises and concepts that can help get a student from beginner to professional in a timely manner.

I like my students to focus on building foundational skills and concepts using a mixture of classical exercises and contemporary songs so that we can have a solid base to build on and to keep bad habits to a minimum (hopefully 0) and still keep my students engaged!

I want to help get as many people as I can into the various instruments I teach (sax, flute, clarinet, and piano) as I find that some of the nicest, intelligent, most well-rounded people I've met have come from the musician world that I'm privy to.

Clarinet

Clarinet

I believe I am qualified to teach on this website for a few reasons, the first of which being that I have earned a music degrees(2 Associate's, 1 Bachelor's) from two of the best music programs in California(Citrus College, Cal State Northridge). During that time, I gained valuable musical knowledge through lessons with various top-tier session artists. On top of the knowledge I accrued through classes and lessons, I also was performing professionally throughout LA, and even went on tour in Hawaii.
Ear Training

Ear Training

With a degree in Jazz Studies, and 8 years of teaching experience, I am perfectly qualified to teach ear training to my students. In fact, I consider it so important a skill to have that I make all of my students do it at some point, regardless of if they are actively interested in it or not. When in college working on it was a hugely pivotal moment in my approach to music and was such an intense class that I had to dedicate typically 2-3 hours a day practicing it so that I could get a good grade in it.
Flute

Flute

In the process of earning my BM, I was fortunate enough to study with multiple amazing session flute artists (including the person who recorded flute for the Anchorman movies). I also had the good fortune to take my skills and use them on multiple band residencies on Oahu, Hawaii each summer from 2012-2015. During my time touring and in college I was able to teach lessons to many students from all skill levels and still do to this day. I currently work with multiple music academies as well as with my own independently found students adding up to over 20 students.
Music Theory

Music Theory

A music professional for a decade, Garrett gained his musical expertise from his Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from one of the best music schools on the west coast (California State University Northridge). This schooling Involved an intense focus on understanding music theory for both composition and improvisation uses.
Piano

Piano

As part of my degree, I spent 5 years studying music theory, and performance. Since my years in college, I have been gigging and teaching piano professionally around LA. With experience teaching all ages and all skill levels I can confidently say that I can help every prospective student improve their musicality and skill.
Saxophone

Saxophone

With multiple Associate's degrees, and a Bachelor's degree all in music fields, I have a huge amount of knowledge and experience both teaching and performing music professionally. I have taught private lessons since 2012 and have multiple students go through to honor bands both locally and statewide. I currently work out of multiple music academies as well as directly with my own independently found students, and have worked in the past out of my local Music and Arts.

Great lesson

Garrett listened to my concerns, gave demonstrations, gave positive and encouraging feedback with a breakdown of critical, easy to understand theory. He also instructed me in what to practice to develop my improvisation. I have specific songs I want to learn so he incorporated chord breakdowns into my next steps toward learning these songs.

Patient tutor with great communication skills

My daughter was very reluctant to begin online flute lessons. She's always had in-person lessons and she thought online lessons would be too difficult. She recently got an open hole flute and she was worried that learning the mechanics of how to play it would not work with remote lessons. After her first lesson with Garrett, she completely changed her mind. He explained things in a clear and precise way that my daughter was easily able to understand. She's been playing the flute for five years and during the first lesson, Garret was able to access what areas she needs to work on. After one lesson, my daughter, my daughter had made progress playing her new flute.

Incredible Teacher

Garret B is to flute playing what Gandolf is to wizardry; kind, patient, and all-knowing.

Knowledgeable, patient, and fun to learn from!

I HIGHLY recommend Garrett for your flute lessons. Garret has a constructive teaching style. He always balances criticism with compliments (i.e. he says things like "what you did well was X' and what you could improve is 'Y' and here's how..."). This way of teaching motivated me to learn more. All the while, Garrett delivers his feedback with a patient, kind, and easy-going attitude. More technically, Garret was able to break down complex concepts, such as how to count rhythms, how to switch between octaves, and how to correctly intonate notes. By providing targeted strategies on how to adjust jaw structure, tighten and loosen embouchure, clap for counting, train my ear for tuning, and more, I left my lessons feeling well-informed and confident. Finally, Garret is extremely generous with him time, sending homework assignments and sheet music for any song you want to learn! He is clearly oriented towards teaching people to play AND enjoy their flute. I had a great experience learning from Garrett and can't recommend him highly enough!
