Hello! I'm Sam, a classical composer and educator. I've taught music privately for the past five years, working with students of all ages and backgrounds. My students have ranged from total beginners to very advanced, from 5 to 75 years-old, in subjects including composition, music theory, ear training, songwriting, and piano performance. My favorite part of teaching is the moment a student suddenly realized how to do something they never thought was possible. Oftentimes, the parts of music that seem so mysterious to us are simpler than we imagined, and the process of discovery can be incredibly fun!

As a composer, I've been awarded prizes from the U.S. National Foundation for the Arts. I've worked with top artists including yMusic (#1 Classical Billboard, 43 weeks) and Hila Plitmann (GRAMMY Winner, Best Classical Vocal Performance). I've even had my music featured in national ads, films, and video games. I've been extremely fortunate to learn from great educators throughout my musical journey, and I attribute any success I've experienced as a musician to strong the music education I received.

As an educator, I'm always thinking of how best to help my students grow. I tailor each lesson to students' individual needs, from basic ear training to advanced orchestration. My students have been remarkably successful, going on to join prestigious programs such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Composer Fellowship and Pasadena Master Chorale Composer Residency!

I'm a classical and film composer actively working in Los Angeles. My music has been performed by ensembles like yMusic (#1 Classical Billboard, 43 weeks) and Hila Plitmann (GRAMMY Winner, Best Classical Vocal Performance). My film/game scores include a national ad series for Shutterfly, Inc., a VR game featured at the UN General Assembly, and a docu-series featuring Taryn Manning (star of "Orange is the New Black"). My composition students have been accepted to prestigious programs including the Los Angeles Philharmonics Composer Fellowship, USC Thornton School of Music, and Sunset ChamberFest. With a wide background and extensive training, I tailor my lessons to help students of all levels hone their musical craft and master the art of composition!

I’m a composer with over 10 years of experience in the industry! I received conservatory-style training at USC Thornton School of Music and San Francisco Conservatory. I studied counterpoint at the Nadia Boulanger Institute in Paris, and I learned theory and ear training from faculty at Juilliard, San Francisco Conservatory, and USC Thornton School of Music. I can help you with whatever theory or aural skills questions you might have and develop a curriculum to suit your needs!

Phenomenal Composition Instructor

I've really enjoyed my lessons with Sam thus far and I very much look forward to continuing my studies with him. He is an exceptional instructor with a wealth of knowledge. I really appreciate that he is focused on teaching the student what is most relevant (he asked me a lot about my goals, listened to my music in advance etc). He even prepared relevant music examples for us to discuss based on what I was interested in. He is also really great at distilling complicated information down to very simple concepts, which is very helpful and makes for a very efficient use of time. Lastly, he has such an enthusiasm and passion for music that it makes learning from him a whole lot of fun. I imagine his teaching style would be a great fit for all ages because he is excellent at adapting to the needs of the student.
