Hello my name is Jesus Gastelum. I am a Spanish teacher at East Los Angeles Performing Arts. I have taught for 5 years, although my tutoring experiences goes far back into 2013. I have experience teaching Spanish Grammar, Culture, Literature, and communication skills. I majored in Spanish Language and Literature and obtained my teaching credential subsequently. Before becoming a Spanish teacher, I worked as a teacher's assistant in multiple subject areas, an experience that gave me a wide range of teaching techniques that I would later employ in my own classroom. I have experience working with students who are taking Spanish at all levels within the areas of Language, culture, grammar, and Literature, as well as AP.
In addition, I have experience teaching English K-8 in the areas of writing and reading comprehension. What I love about tutoring is the way students overcome their academic challenges through more personalized approaches. As a tutor I can assess the student's individual needs and find the best methods to help the student reach his or her learning objective, while taking into account his own learning style.
I can help students improve their writing skills whether they are dealing with grammar issues, sentence structure, or paragraph form. In the area of reading comprehension, I can provide students a range of reading strategies that can help them become active readers and thus improve their ability to understand and interpret textual information. I also like to support students expand their vocabulary knowledge so that they know how to use their words in a variety of contexts.
I have been passionate about Spanish Language and Culture since I was a teenager, reason for which I majored in it. I have a deep understanding of the cultural and literary world surrounding the Spanish Language. I can help students not only comprehend but also analyze and interpret prose and poetry from precolonial all the way to postmodern writers.
