About Alex

Bio

Hi there! My name’s Alex, and I’m here to help you build a strong foundation of understanding that will support you throughout your studies. I have several years of experience as a teaching assistant in chemistry at UCLA and as a tutor in chemistry, math, and physics at both the high school and undergraduate levels. In working with students from a wide range of backgrounds, I’ve learned how to adapt explanations so they connect with what you already know and resonate with your interests.

I received my PhD and MS in Materials Chemistry from UCLA, and MSE, BSE, and BA degrees in Materials Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. This background equips me well to help you understand both general and advanced topics in chemistry, physics, math, and materials science. I’ve also passed the EIT certification exam in Electrical and Computer Engineering and have hands-on experience in scientific computing and web development. Whether you’re just beginning your programming journey or looking for constructive feedback on your code, I can provide clear, practical guidance to help improve your skills. If you’d like help with any of these areas, I’d be glad to work with you!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra underpins all of math and science, and it shouldn’t feel like memorizing steps. I focus on the patterns that underlie algebra’s rules so you can reason rather than memorize. We’ll apply these patterns to problems in topics you enjoy and bring algebra from the textbook into the real world.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra underpins all of math and science, and it shouldn’t feel like memorizing steps. I focus on the patterns that underlie algebra’s rules so you can reason rather than memorize. We’ll apply these patterns to problems in topics you enjoy and bring algebra from the textbook into the real world.
Calculus

Calculus

I have taken mathematics courses in the calculus series up through partial differential equations and use calculus on a regular basis in my field of study.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry is my strongest subject. I have a PhD in materials chemistry from UCLA and served as a teaching assistant for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and upper-division materials synthesis labs. I primarily tutor general, physical/quantum, and materials chemistry. If you'd like help with your studies or want to discuss topics like graduate school and research, let me know!
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

Coding is one of my favorite parts of science. During my PhD in materials chemistry at UCLA, I built open-source tools for predictive X-ray diffraction modeling and developed data analysis pipelines. I primarily tutor Python and MATLAB – from data cleaning, analysis, and visualization to numerical solvers and computational modeling. I’m also experienced with JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, SQL, HTML/CSS, and Igor Pro. If you’d like help developing your programming skills or tackling a project, let me know!
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have extensive MATLAB experience starting from 2018. I used it throughout my PhD to model X-ray diffraction patterns and analyze experimental data. I also contributed to open-source software for diffraction modeling and peak-fitting of absorbance spectra.
Physics

Physics

I utilize various principles from physics in my field of study on a daily basis, ranging from quantum mechanics and solid-state physics to thermodynamics and heat transfer.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Algebra underpins all of math and science, and it shouldn’t feel like memorizing steps. I focus on the patterns that underlie algebra’s rules so you can reason rather than memorize. We’ll apply these patterns to problems in topics you enjoy and bring algebra from the textbook into the real world.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have previously taken mathematics up through multi-variable calculus, partial differential equations and linear algebra. Because precalculus is a prerequisite to these, I am confident in my ability to tutor in this subject.
