I am a professional director with extensive experience in theatre, film, and network television. I recently retired from CalArts where I taught acting and directing in both the theatre and film schools for over 20 years. I founded and was the artistic director of a theatre company (Direct Theatre) in New York City during the 70's and 80's which began the careers of such notable artists as Christopher Durang, Sigourney Weaver, Dennis McIntyre, and Albert Innaurato. Furthermore I have directed Kathy Bates, Al Pacino, Lois Nettleton, Calista Flockhart, and Neal Patrick Harris.
I currently teach two professional workshops, one in acting and another in writing.
I have tutored and coached hundreds of actors for auditions and for film and theatre roles they are already cast in and I love watching students grow under my tutelage. I always try to find "better choices" than the obvious, mundane, and cliched in the material at hand. My approach is "action based" with very strong attention to mining the text whether it's Shakespeare or commercial copy. I have an excellent sense of humor.
