About Jack

Prospective Students,

If you are having trouble "getting over the hump" in a science class, I can help accelerate your success. If you want to be prepared for a career in science, I will provide you with the tools to get there. My tutoring will give you the edge you need to fulfill your potential and jump-start your future.

My students always enjoy the tutoring process due to my engaging style and positive encouragement in the face of obstacles. I learned early on that I can explain scientific concepts to others very well, using techniques tailored to each individual student's learning style. With the use of visual aids, analogy, puzzle-solving approaches, mnemonic devices, etc. I have found that anyone can understand science.

I get the most out of my students by challenging them to learn the language of of each subject, not just memorize facts. Students benefit from my extensive research experience in both academia and the private sector, as it supplements the "textbook knowledge" with real world examples. With me as your tutor, you will learn the physical and life sciences from someone who has applied that knowledge for almost 15 years.

I began tutoring students in 2002, while still an undergraduate at MIT. I mainly tutored underclassmen in general chemistry courses, working with over 20 students until I graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in chemistry (organic/biochem focus). While at MIT I received awards for academic excellence (Dean's List) in 2001 and 2002.

I then worked for 7 years as a medicinal research chemist from 2003 to 2010, for companies such as Schering-Plough and Merck, where I published numerous research papers and a patent. In 2010 I returned to the academic world to get my Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UCLA, studying apoptosis and chemotherapeutics.

While at UCLA I won the Hanson-Dow Teaching Award for Organic Chemistry I (30A), as well as numerous research fellowships and the Pfizer-UCLA Dissertation Award for Excellence in Organic Synthesis. I was a teaching assistant for courses in general and organic chemistry from 2010-2012. I also tutored at UCLA, helping students get A's in general, organic, and biochemistry lab courses and classes from 2010-2012. Now that I am finishing my Ph.D. (2016), I hope to again help students become proficient in the subjects I love.

I am ready to help students master general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related subsciences. I can assist with honors and AP science classes at the high school level, or any college level science course, including graduate classes in organic chemistry and biochemistry. I obtained a 4.0 GPA at MIT and a 3.9 GPA at UCLA, so I know what it takes to succeed academically.

I can meet anywhere within 10 miles of Palms for tutoring, 6 pm to 10 pm on weekdays (near UCLA preferred) and 10 am to 10 pm on weekends. I will provide practice problems, some take home work, and periodic benchmarks to make sure you achieve your goals. My base rate is $80/ hr and I do provide discounts for longer sessions and groups of 2-4 students at a time. Please contact me for more details.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Since organic chemistry is not learned effectively by memorization, I help students to learn the language of organic chemistry. My tutoring style is adaptable to visual learners, practice learners, recitation learners, and every other type of learning style I've come across. I adapt to the student, and bring all the tools (modeling kits, practice problems, etc.) they might need to succeed.
