Prospective Students,

If you are having trouble "getting over the hump" in a science class, I can help accelerate your success. If you want to be prepared for a career in science, I will provide you with the tools to get there. My tutoring will give you the edge you need to fulfill your potential and jump-start your future.

My students always enjoy the tutoring process due to my engaging style and positive encouragement in the face of obstacles. I learned early on that I can explain scientific concepts to others very well, using techniques tailored to each individual student's learning style. With the use of visual aids, analogy, puzzle-solving approaches, mnemonic devices, etc. I have found that anyone can understand science.

I get the most out of my students by challenging them to learn the language of of each subject, not just memorize facts. Students benefit from my extensive research experience in both academia and the private sector, as it supplements the "textbook knowledge" with real world examples. With me as your tutor, you will learn the physical and life sciences from someone who has applied that knowledge for almost 15 years.

I began tutoring students in 2002, while still an undergraduate at MIT. I mainly tutored underclassmen in general chemistry courses, working with over 20 students until I graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in chemistry (organic/biochem focus). While at MIT I received awards for academic excellence (Dean's List) in 2001 and 2002.

I then worked for 7 years as a medicinal research chemist from 2003 to 2010, for companies such as Schering-Plough and Merck, where I published numerous research papers and a patent. In 2010 I returned to the academic world to get my Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UCLA, studying apoptosis and chemotherapeutics.

While at UCLA I won the Hanson-Dow Teaching Award for Organic Chemistry I (30A), as well as numerous research fellowships and the Pfizer-UCLA Dissertation Award for Excellence in Organic Synthesis. I was a teaching assistant for courses in

Biochemistry

I am an MIT and UCLA graduate with over 15 years of experience as a scientist in both academic and private industry settings. While my main focus has always been chemistry, I used biology and biochemistry daily while designing and testing potential chemotherapeutics. As part of my training, I spent 5 years working in a dedicated molecular biology/biochemistry lab. I have been proficient in the biological sciences throughout my work in the private sector and during my undergraduate and graduate studies, as evidenced by numerous publications featuring novel scientific research on the interface of both chemistry and biology. For these efforts I won a large fellowship from the National Institute of Health to pay for the bulk of my Ph.D. For me, knowledge of biology and biochemistry has been imperative to my career as a scientist.     I finished my Ph.D. in the spring of 2016 and have been tutoring regularly each evening after my day job, However, I didn't just start helping students for the first time last year. I have been tutoring students in biology, chemistry, and related subjects since 2002. My history of working with students from all backgrounds and educational levels is long and successful. Besides tutoring, I also worked as a teaching assistant for many college level science courses, winning the graduate student teaching award from UCLA in 2010.

Great Tutor for Organic Chemistry

Jack was very helpful during the summer while I was enrolled in an organic chemistry course. He provided beneficial study materials such as worksheets, old tests and quizzes that I used to help me study for my exams. He was even able to re-create homework problems for extra practice. He's brilliant when it comes to Orgo and he's very knowledgeable on most topics and chapters. Jack was also willing to meet with me either on campus or wherever it was most convenient for me. As far as communication, he was very quick with emails, texts and phone calls if I needed something. Not only is he consistent, but after every exam he asked me how everything went and if I didn't understand a certain topic. Although, our time together was short, I'd definitely recommend him to other students who are having a difficult time learning organic.

Organic Chemistry Refresh

I was able to refresh on the key topics of Organic Chemistry I, and work on synthesis problems from Organic Chemistry II. He made the material easy to understand, and cleared any misconceptions.

Knowledgable and helpful tutor

Jack has been a huge support to my son in his AP Biology studies. He has a deep knowledge of the material and is effective in teaching the concepts in preparation for class.

Extremely knowledgable and very helpful

Jack used great examples to convey theories. He also broke things down into simpler, more easily understood ideas. Through his thorough instruction, my daughter was able to understand the material and even do the exercises on her own. Although great for us, this may not be advantageous for Jack as the more she understands, the less we need him! Thank you Jack- you saved us $$$!

Great tutor

From my tutoring session with Jack, I found that he was a great tutor and was able to adapt to my learning style. He came prepared and was able to clarify the many topics in organic chemistry that were hard for me to comprehend before he was able to explain them. I highly recommend him.
