About Jacob

I've always loved learning, both from teachers and independently. From a young age, I was knocking back books with a voracious appetite, a practice I've continued to this day. My passion for reading led to a passion for writing, a skill which serves every aspect of my professional, academic, and personal life. As an honors graduate from the University of Chicago, one of the most rigorous liberal arts colleges in the country, I know firsthand how crucial writing skills are in every aspect of life, from test-taking to essay writing to applying for jobs. As an Emmy-award-winning documentary filmmaker, I bring a passion for communication, digital technology, and visual arts. As a tutor, I bring a patience, clarity, and rigor that will lead to not only higher performance, but a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Whether we're working on SAT writing, reading analysis, a history essay, the periodic table of elements, or learning Adobe Photoshop, I aim to keep the student challenged and engaged without being overwhelmed by the material. I assign homework assignments at the end of every lesson, keep track of the student's progress as the tutorials continue, and provide periodic progress reports and assessments.

I am flexible with time and location, allowing cancellations up to 12 hours in advance. There are several good coffee shops, bookstores, and libraries in the area that are ideal for tutoring sessions, but I'm happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I've been playing chess since elementary school, when my dad taught me how to play. At that time, I was a member of my school's chess club. I played through college and high school with friends and family, and to this day bring a chess set whenever I move somewhere new. I'm an avid player on Chess.com, and just finished a book on the history of chess called The Immortal Game.

Classics

The University of Chicago, where I graduated with a BA with honors, requires every BA student to pass through a rigorous Classics program. In these courses, I studied Plato's Republic, the Illiad and Aeneid (I studied the Odyssey in high school), Greek and Roman history and the surrounding cultural-historical contexts for these classic works, as well as early Christian thinkers (I took a course on Augustine's 'Confessions', for instance). Throughout all this time, I engaged deeply with the material and never got less than a B+ in any course.

Drawing

I've been an avid drawer since I was a small child. This is a hobby I've never dropped. At the University of Chicago, I excelled in all my art courses. One in particular, a graphic novel-making class with renowned graphic novelist Ivan Brunetti, taught me a great deal about visual storytelling, and put me in lifelong touch with Brunetti. In my professional life, besides being a screenwriter and director, I make hand-drawn animations, one of which I was recently commissioned to make for a commercial for a skateboarding company here in LA.

Graphic Design

I learned Photoshop in high school, and since then I've used it professionally and personally on a regular basis. As a professional graphic designer in college (I designed posters, booklets, flyers, and handouts for the Center for Leadership and Involvement at the University of Chicago), I used Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign frequently. As a freelance filmmaker, I work with this software both in video editing (for things like designing title sequences and still graphics) and in marketing (for designing posters, online ad campaigns, and other outreach materials).

Reading

I receive an AP English score of 4 (100%) in high school. I have a BA with honors from the University of Chicago, one of the most rigorous critical reading and writing curricula in the country.

Religion

At the University of Chicago, I was immersed in the studies of ancient religion and Christianity, from Greek mythology to the writings of St. Augustine and Dante.

Since graduating college and working as a filmmaker, I have studied eastern religion, with a special focus on the Ayurveda Vedanta tradition of Hinduism. I have lived and studied at a Za-Zen Buddhist monastery in Appalachia and, most recently, have studied the Mahabharata (one of the most sacred Hindu texts, an epic narrative which includes the Bhagavad Gita).

Study Skills

I graduated high school with two AP credits and 3.9 GPA, and then got a BA from the University of Chicago with honors in 2009. Throughout that time, I set reasonable but rigorous deadlines for myself, created notecards for memorization, worked with friends to quiz myself on certain subjects, gave myself time to write at least 3 drafts of most essays, and in general created a productive and workable study method.

Video Production

In 2009, I received a bachelor's degree with honors in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago. Since then, I have produced documentaries nationally and internationally, including a series of Emmy-winning regional short documentaries produced in Detroit. I'm experienced with several types of digital cameras, Final Cut Pro, and the entire Adobe Creative Suite.
