About Deborah

I teach ESL at Kingston University in Norwalk and taught for years at LAUSD adult schools. I've also tutored reading, writing, speaking and grammar with WyzAnt for the past couple of years.
My education consists of a Masters in TESOL as well as a secondary Masters in Ed. w/a specialty in special education. I also have an adult ed credential in both ESL and English.

When I teach, I try and determine the student's needs and tailor lessons to that end. I try to be friendly and patient. If the student has any special interests that can be used to enhance and motivate learning, I will be sure to apply it. My teaching style is both verbal and visual. I focus on a student's improvement and try and give lessons that are best suited to their learning style.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and have been teaching all levels for past nine years.

Special Needs

I have a Master's of Education with a specialty in Special Education. This line of study involved many of the scientific methods to help students with special needs. I have also taught many students who have had some type of disability.

TOEFL

I have a Masters In TESOL (teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from CalState LA. I also have been teaching university level students to prepare for the TOEFL. Additionally, I have administered practice TOEFLs to students that have consequently scored significantly higher after a semester of instruction.

Vocabulary

I have taken English classes that covered English literature and interpretation. I passed the CSET part of literature, and grading grammar. I have also taught English composition in college, English credit classes. Naturally, both informal and formal vocabulary instruction is given in ESL or to ELL students. Additionally, academic language is taught to the ELL's that plan to attend American Universities.

Writing

I teach English for Speakers of Other Languages and writing is a big component of that.
