Struggling to figure out those ancient languages or learn which dates are important for a history class? Have no fear! It's very easy to break the "code" of how these subjects work.

I'm a current secondary school Latin teacher, and I did my graduate studies at UCLA (where my dissertation work was on Greek democratic history). Don't let the ancient education fool you: I'm a huge modern history nerd, especially at trivia competitions. I love languages and history; it would be a shame for a student to be discouraged from these great subjects and the critical thinking skills that come with them.

In addition to my current teaching position, I have tutored and taught students of all ages. My past courses include introductory college courses in Latin and Greek, Roman and Greek civilization courses, as well as middle school English. My skills include creating individualized curriculum to serve a student's needs, assisting with AP test preparation, building reading proficiency in the target language, and editing writing.

Although Latin and Greek have often been seen as "elite" languages, I am committed to the belief that anyone can learn these languages. I have worked with both the comprehensible input style of language instruction as well as grammar-translation. Once students can see these patterns, translating is like solving a puzzle. For students needing tutoring in history, I stress the "why" behind our topics. Why do certain events transpire the way they do? Why do certain perspectives on the past come down to us, and others don't? Why study the past at all?

I like to spend part of our first meeting understanding what goals a student has for their own study, as well as gathering information about the student's study and organizational skills. Once I understand their goals and previous working methods, I can draw up a plan for future learning. If you think we would work well together, please feel free to contact me! I'd be glad to answer any and all questions about my pedagogy.

Approved Subjects

Classics

Classics

I am working on my PhD in Classics and have been a teaching assistant for various Classics courses at UCLA the past six years. I have just taught my own course on myth the past summer.
Greek

Greek

I have a C.Phil from UCLA in Classical philology, and my dissertation was on the ancient Greek author Isocrates. I have studied ancient Greek for 10+ years now. My specialty is in Classical Greek literature (particularly the historians, tragedy, and Pindar), and I wrote my MA thesis on Xenophon and Pindar. I have taught ancient Greek on the college level, and I have tutored a range of students in introductory and intermediate courses.
Latin

Latin

I am a Latin teacher for grades 6-12 at a private school in L.A. Before that, I studied and taught Latin (along with Greek) as a graduate student at UCLA Classics. I have been to Rome, written research papers on Roman authors, and delivered conference papers on Latin literature. Latin was my first love, before Greek: I began learning it as an autodidact in high school!

Knowledgeable and Energetic Latin Tutor

Ashleigh is a wonderful Latin tutor. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, but she is something far rarer—a teacher. She is enthusiastic and passionate about the subject and has a way of getting my son excited about it, as well. She took time to discuss our short and long term goals for the subject and provided numerous supplemental materials to reinforce classroom lessons. I recommend her without reservation.

Excellent Tutor!

Ashleigh was a fantastic tutor for the UCLA Latin Intensive course over the summer. With her experience as an instructor of that course the previous year, she was able to provide me with numerous handouts, practice exams, and worksheets. She graded my work as though it were the course midterm, final, etc., and gave me incredible insight into how the professors and TAs would view my work and my progress. Her feedback was extraordinarily helpful and motivating and made a huge difference in my ultimate grade. Ashleigh was extremely patient and was able to make any complex topic seem simple. She was always willing to adjust her schedule to meet with me as needed, which was great. More importantly, as a doctoral student in Classics, it is clear that Ashleigh loves the subject matter and was able to transmit her infectious enthusiasm for Classics and the intricacies of Latin to me. She made what could have been a grueling, intense course into something that was fun and well worth the challenge. I cannot recommend Ashleigh highly enough. She is an outstanding Latin tutor.

Great tutor!

Thank you very much for the insight you gave me not only into Lysias, but how to read the commentaries. I finally have a greater understanding of 3:15, and also this leads me to more questions, which made it much more interesting. And, thank you for the book recommendations. I found a great article on trauma to wound- and whether it is a private or public trial-etc. Looking forward to our next session. Another wonderful session, I learned so much and love the articles Ashleigh brings. Looking forward to the next session, as it is always inspiring! Thank you. I feel like I won the lottery having Ashleigh as my tutor. She is so bright and intelligent along with being patient. Plus, not only is she knowledgeable about the subject, but she is passionate about it. I always look forward to our sessions. Thank you, Ashleigh and WyzAnt!
