The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is a standardized test administered throughout the state of California and Oregon for individuals who want to teach at public schools and gain a credential. It is divided into 3 sections; the Reading section and the Math section each contain 50 multiple-choice questions, while the Writing section consists of two essay questions. The test must be completed in four hours, but test-takers may use that time to work on any or all of the three sections. For the past 3 years, I have successfully tutored numerous students who were preparing to take the CBEST with success. This is based on the fact that as a science major who obtained a bachelor degree in Biochemistry from the University of CA, Los Angeles, UCLA, I have received very high scores from the GRE (Graduate Record Examination: Reading Comprehension: 94th Percentile; Analytical Writing: 94th Percentile, Math: 770 out of 800). At the same time, the Math, the Reading and the Writing section on the CBEST are very similar to the 3 sections on the GRE. For the math, the GRE is in reality much more difficult than the CBEST and consists of problems based on Algebraic and Statistical concepts and problems. The same parallel can be drawn for the Reading and the Writing sections of CBEST.

The GED Examination is divided into 5 tests: 1. Language Arts, Writing 2. Social Studies 3. Science 4. Language Arts, Reading 5. Mathematics The five tests are designed to measure the knowledge and skills that a student should have acquired after four years in high school. One important thing about the tests is that even though the questions may involve a specific area of study such as science, you don't have to memorize specific facts, details, dates, or even exact definitions. Much of this information is given to you in the test itself. You will have to be able to read and understand the material that is presented and then to answer questions about it. With the exception of the essay part of the Writing Skills test, all of the questions in the GED Examination are multiple choice. You will be given a brief statement, short passage, map, table, or diagram, and then you will have to answer one or more multiple-choice questions about this material. I help the students who are trying to obtain their GED by: 1. Identify their specific areas of needs and then provide intensive review for all necessary sections with relevant practice material. 2. In addition to the tutoring, provide ongoing homework as part of the tutoring to help them both reinforce and retain the learning.

The ISEE stands for the Independent School Entrance Exam and it is an admission test that contains four levels: primary, lower, middle and upper: • Primary level is for students enrolled in grades 1, 2 and 3. It is an hour-long test which mainly focus on a reading and math section and a short writing sample. • Lower level is for students currently in grades 4 and 5. • Middle level is for students in grades 6 and 7. • Upper level is for students in grades 8 through 11. For the Lower, Middle, and Upper levels, the ISEE consists of three parts: (1) carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure capability for learning; (2) reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about strengths and weaknesses in those areas; and (3) an essay section. The essay is timed and written in response to a prompt. It is not scored; it is photocopied and sent only to the schools requested. By using a standardized ISEE study guide, I provide in-depth and tailored tutoring based on individual student needs and preparation of lessons from the actual ISEE exam which includes the: • Math review (review of all mathematical concepts and data interpretation) and relevant exercises. • Verbal reasoning which includes a comprehensive grammar review and reading comprehension strategies and exercises. • Writing topics based on ISEE preparation manual. • Provision of relevant practice and exercises to supplement the above tutoring. Phoebe tutored me in verbal as well as quantitative. My score improved 6 points in the verbal section and 5 points in the quant section. She gives practice material as homework and then goes over it in depth with you during the session which is extremely helpful to have access to as much material as possible. In regards to the math section specifically, she first teaches you the concepts through exercises and then shows you how to apply those concepts to real GRE questions. This is helpful because with the fundamentals being taught first you can apply what you know to just about any GRE problem instead of learning how to do specific problems and not being able to relate it to something slightly different next time.

GREAT TUTOR! FIVE STARS!!

This was our first time using Wyzant. My daughter wanted to improve her score on the reading section of the ACT. She knew she would struggle with that section based on the 9th & 10th grade pre ACT scores. I spoke with Phoebe before the session and I knew she would be a good tutor for my daughter, so we scheduled the first tutoring session in January for the ACT test date in March. Phoebe is a great tutor!! My daughter did not want to sit in ACT prep classes and she did not want to use self paced courses. She immediately complimented Phoebe tutoring and approach to the subject. After a few sessions she felt more confident and answered questions correctly on the practice tests. After only 7 weeks of tutoring and meeting once a week, she scored a 29 on the reading section (91st percentile).
