About Tohoru

I am a MIT graduate, and have been a math tutor/teacher for the last 16 years. I have taught or tutored all levels through Calculus BC & College Calculus -High school, middle school and college. My experience includes being a faculty math teacher at the NOTRE DAME ACADEMY (High School), a home-school tutor in math/honor Chemistry through the LAUREL SPRINGS program, an instructor for the JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY/SYLVAN AIIY program for gifted children, a teacher at MULHOLLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL, an instructor for PRINCETON REVIEW & COMPASS EDUCATION, as well as being a in-home math tutor for numerous students from Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Windward, Campbell Hall, Beverly Hills High, USC, Cal State Long Beach, Santa Monica College.

I am very good at focusing on the particular needs of each individual student.

I am patient, relaxed and truly enjoy this work. In addition to my engineering degree, I also come from 2 previous generations of world class science/math academics from both sides of my family (My dad was a MIT professor).

Also having been a professional actor during this entire time, being an educator in math/science has turned out to be a most rewarding and satisfying parallel career, especially given my background. I also believe that my acting background has helped me immensely in relating to kids both challenged and gifted in math.

Here are samples of what parents and students have written about me:

-"Tohoru has an amazing way of connecting with both of my kids, He has made math more understandable and has certainly taken away the apprehension. He is so patient and really makes each session effective and enjoyable. Nick is doing noticeably better in Math and most importantly doesn't fear or hate it anymore. (Parent)

-"They look forward to it because they enjoy him and his style...Tohoru has a great sense of humor, is kind and makes learning easy. He speaks to the boys on their level but never speaks down to them. He gives them the respect they need and in turn has earned theirs. (Parent)

-“He gave her the tools and strategies to cope with the format of the test itself, and simultaneously fine tuned her math skills, allowing her to progress to even higher levels of mathematic understanding and achievement then we had thought possible.”(Parent)

-“Tohoru has an excellent way of relating to young people. His upbeat personality helped to make the process fun, and quite frankly, that is a miracle.” (parent)

-"He makes it fun and easier to understand. He's patient. I really like him a lot. Whenever I need extra help before a test I just text him and he always finds time to help me." (Student)

-"I have had several other math tutors before Tohoru and none of them have helped me as much. I couldn't survived math without him!" (Student)

-“I would recommend Tohoru without reservation”

-“You have helped so much in two hours- it’s really wonderful. My son has been so impressed with how you observed and knew right away the steps he was missing or performing incorrectly. It’s such a relief to him. Just sorry we didn’t find you sooner- would have saved us a lot of worry.”

Great Tutor — Seriously great tutor, helped me through calc 2. Always willing to expand on and explain any concept that I needed help on and also managed to make calc more enjoyable and grounded than most other teachers I've had. I doubt I would have been able to pass calc 2 with the grade I did without his help. ...
