About Cooper

Bio

I help students understand genetics, molecular and cell biology, and neuroscience, and build the research and writing skills behind them. We can work through biological concepts, interpret scientific figures, read a research paper, organize a scientific argument or explore an introductory R/RStudio workflow. I connect ideas to concrete examples from experimental and computational research.

I earned a BS at UC San Diego and served as an Undergraduate Instructional Assistant for Genetics in 2018 and Genes, Brains, and Behavior in 2020. My teaching experience is in university courses and academic writing support. As a UCLA Writing Consultant during 2024–2025, I supported academic and scientific writing, manuscripts, grant and fellowship applications, and revision strategies. My research includes functional and cis-regulatory genomics at UCSF and human genetics and computational analysis at UCLA. My UCLA neuroscience doctoral research/training ran from September 2023 to June 2025; I am no longer enrolled and no graduate degree was awarded.

For a lesson, we identify your goal and work through the reasoning together. I can break a complex concept into manageable steps, use an analogous example and ask you to explain the idea in your own words. For writing, we examine organization, evidence and clarity so you can apply the revision strategy yourself. For R, we trace how a small dataset is prepared, analyzed and visualized. I offer feedback and coaching that support your own work and authorship, with the aim of helping you become a more independent learner.

Approved Subjects

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

My background combines a UC San Diego B.S., probability and statistics coursework, and applied human-genetics research. During neuroscience research and training at UCLA, I worked with genomic and brain-imaging data, quality control, visualization and statistical interpretation in R-based workflows. As a UCLA Writing Consultant, I also helped researchers communicate methods and quantitative results clearly. I focus on foundational applied biostatistics, research design and interpretation rather than advanced statistical theory or clinical-trial programming.
Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I earned a UC San Diego B.S. and worked on human-genetics and longitudinal brain-imaging analyses during neuroscience research and training at UCLA. My projects used R, Python and Unix/HPC workflows for preparing data, quality control, visualization and statistical reporting. I also supported scientific and quantitative writing as a UCLA Writing Consultant. I help students trace a reproducible analysis, interpret figures and explain assumptions and limitations.
Data Science

Data Science

I completed Data Science in Practice and Introduction to Python at UC San Diego, earning A+ grades in both courses. My later research included genomic quality control and analysis of longitudinal brain-imaging and genetic data with R, Python and Unix/HPC workflows. I help students organize data, check assumptions, create useful visualizations and explain analytical results. My focus is introductory and research-oriented data science rather than production machine learning or software engineering.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I worked as a Writing Consultant at UCLA from September 2024 through August 2025, supporting academic and scientific writing. My experience includes manuscript revision, grant and fellowship applications, methods explanations and quantitative reporting. For essays, I help students develop a clear central argument, organize evidence and revise paragraphs for coherence and precision. I use discussion and feedback so the student understands and owns the final writing.
Genetics

Genetics

I earned a BS at UC San Diego in June 2020 and served as an Undergraduate Instructional Assistant for Genetics from September to December 2018. At UCSF, I used CRISPR screening, iPSC models and sequencing-based methods to investigate functional and cis-regulatory genomics. My research experience also includes human genetics and computational analysis at UCLA during prior doctoral research and training that ended in June 2025; I am no longer enrolled and no graduate degree was awarded. I connect genetics concepts to experimental design, scientific figures and evidence interpretation, helping students work through the reasoning and explain conclusions in their own words.
Linux

Linux

My scientific research has used Unix/Linux command-line workflows and the Hoffman2 high-performance computing environment. I designed multi-stage Bash/Unix scripts for genotype quality control, standardized variant identifiers and documented reproducible analyses. I help beginners understand files and directories, shell commands, scripts and the organization of research workflows. My focus is scientific computing and command-line fundamentals rather than enterprise systems administration.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

From March through June 2020, I served as an Undergraduate Instructional Assistant for Genes, Brains, and Behavior at UC San Diego. During neuroscience doctoral research and training at UCLA from September 2023 through June 2025, I analyzed longitudinal brain-imaging data and contributed to imaging-genetics research; no graduate degree was awarded. My laboratory work at UCSF investigated neurodevelopment with neuronal cell models and CRISPR-based experiments. For neuroscience tutoring, I connect cellular mechanisms and brain development with experimental controls, scientific figures and research-paper interpretation.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

As a UCLA Writing Consultant, I supported academic writing and grant and fellowship applications. My research and teaching experience helps me ask focused questions about a student’s preparation, interests and concrete examples. For personal statements, I help students identify an authentic narrative, connect experiences to their goals and revise structure and clarity. The student supplies the facts, voice and final decisions; I do not invent experiences or promise admissions outcomes.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

At UCSF, I led journal-club discussions and presented functional-genomics research to colleagues and collaborators. I also served as an Undergraduate Instructional Assistant at UC San Diego and created scientific presentations through student leadership. I help students organize an explanation for a particular audience, design clear slides and practice delivery and questions. My strongest fit is academic and scientific presentations, with emphasis on accurate content and understandable reasoning.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I worked as a UCLA Writing Consultant, supporting academic and scientific writing, manuscripts, grants and quantitative reporting. My research background includes functional genomics and computational analyses, and my highest completed degree is a UC San Diego B.S. I help with research questions, argument structure, clear methods, presentation of results and revision plans. My role is coaching and feedback so students can communicate their own research clearly and follow their institution’s requirements.
UNIX

UNIX

I used Unix/Bash and high-performance computing for genomic data preparation and analysis during research at UCLA. My documented work includes multi-stage genotype quality-control scripts, standardized identifiers and reproducible reporting. I help students read shell commands, organize files, trace scripts and understand how individual steps form a research workflow. Sessions focus on fundamentals and scientific applications rather than enterprise systems administration.
