I have a B.A. in Computer Science from Reed College and have been tutoring computer science and mathematics one-on-one since 2021. My tutoring has covered programming, algorithms, data structures, mathematics, and machine learning. I tailor lessons to the student’s current level: for beginners, I focus on building a clear understanding of programming fundamentals; for more advanced students, I can work through algorithms, data structures, debugging, larger programming projects, and machine-learning concepts.

Outside tutoring, I work in computer science research and software engineering. My research focuses on artificial intelligence, computational neuroscience, recurrent neural networks, and machine learning, and has resulted in peer-reviewed and preprint publications. I have also worked professionally as a software engineer building production systems in Python, Django, PostgreSQL, and related technologies. This gives me experience both with the theoretical side of computer science and with writing and debugging software used in real applications.

My approach is patient and problem-focused. Rather than simply giving a student the answer, I try to identify exactly where their mental model breaks down and work from there. I can help with coursework and homework, prepare students for more advanced CS classes, or work with students who want to learn Python and build projects independently. My goal is for students to leave a session understanding not only how to solve the immediate problem, but why the solution works.

Approved Subjects

C

C

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and have experience programming in C through systems-oriented coursework and software projects. I am comfortable teaching pointers, arrays, strings, structs, functions, recursion, dynamic memory allocation, file I/O, loops, conditionals, and command-line arguments. I can also help students understand stack and heap memory, pointer arithmetic, multidimensional arrays, compilation errors, and common sources of undefined behavior. My approach emphasizes tracing memory and program state directly so students develop a precise model of what their C code is doing.
C++

C++

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and have experience using C++ for coursework, algorithmic programming, and lower-level software development. I am comfortable teaching syntax, classes, inheritance, pointers and references, dynamic memory, templates, STL containers, recursion, and object-oriented design. I can also help students with debugging, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and understanding the distinction between value semantics, references, and pointers. I focus on making the underlying execution and memory model clear so students can reason about C++ rather than relying on memorized syntax.
Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering

I have a degree in Computer Science and experience working across software, operating systems, networking, and computational systems. My work includes programming in Python and C/C++, Linux systems, algorithm design, and understanding how software interacts with underlying hardware. I can help students with introductory computer architecture, digital logic, embedded-programming concepts, and systems-level problem solving. I emphasize building an intuitive understanding of how computation moves from code to the machine level.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have extensive programming experience through academic research, open-source software development, and independent projects. I primarily work in Python but also have experience with C/C++, Java, SQL, scripting, algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming, debugging, and software design. I have built scientific software, machine-learning systems, simulations, and reproducible data-processing pipelines. I can work with students from their first programming course through advanced project-based programming.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I hold a degree in Computer Science and have used computer science extensively in academic research and software development. My background includes algorithms, data structures, programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computational modeling, operating systems, and scientific computing. I have developed open-source software and research code used for computational neuroscience and biological modeling. I can help students understand both theoretical concepts and how those concepts translate into working programs.
Data Science

Data Science

I use Python extensively for scientific data analysis, visualization, statistical analysis, and computational modeling. My research has involved processing experimental and simulation datasets, designing reproducible analysis pipelines, evaluating models, and interpreting quantitative results. I am comfortable with NumPy, pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy, scikit-learn, and related scientific Python tools. I can help students with data cleaning, exploratory analysis, visualization, statistics, model evaluation, and research-oriented data science.
Java

Java

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and have substantial experience programming in Java through coursework, software projects, and algorithmic problem solving. I am comfortable teaching core Java topics including object-oriented programming, inheritance, interfaces, exceptions, collections, recursion, arrays, and debugging. I can also help students understand data structures, algorithms, program design, and how Java’s type system and runtime behavior affect their code. My tutoring approach emphasizes tracing execution carefully, identifying the underlying programming model, and helping students build enough conceptual understanding to solve similar problems independently.
Linux

Linux

I use Linux as my primary development environment for programming, research, and everyday computing. I am comfortable with the command line, package management, shell scripting, permissions, filesystems, processes, networking, SSH, Git, development environments, and troubleshooting. I have used Linux for scientific computing, machine learning, software development, and managing research workflows. I can help students become comfortable both using Linux interactively and understanding how the underlying system works.
Machine Learning/ AI

Machine Learning/ AI

My research uses machine learning, reinforcement learning, neural networks, and computational modeling to study biological and artificial systems. I have implemented and evaluated machine-learning models in Python using modern scientific and deep-learning tools, and I have experience with supervised learning, neural networks, reinforcement learning, model evaluation, and experimental design. My research has included reservoir computing, biologically inspired neural networks, and machine-learning applications in neuroscience. I can teach both the mathematical foundations of machine learning and the practical process of implementing and evaluating models in code.
Python

Python

I have extensive experience using Python for scientific computing, data analysis, machine learning, and software development. My research work has involved developing Python-based computational models, analyzing large datasets, and building reproducible research pipelines. I have also developed and maintained open-source Python software and am comfortable teaching core concepts including functions, classes, data structures, object-oriented programming, debugging, and algorithmic problem solving. I can work with students from introductory Python through more advanced technical and research-oriented applications.
