Hi, I'm Tony! I graduated from The Citadel and NYU with a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in History, respectively. I am a 3rd-year PhD student in History at UCLA. I've worked as a language tutor for a year, working both in group sessions and one-on-one. And more significantly, I've been a Teaching Assistant for 10 undergraduate courses at NYU and UCLA.
As a Teaching Assistant, I have taught numerous recitation sessions, where my job was to bring the material from the lectures and readings to life. Usually in classrooms of 15-20 students, it was my responsibility to foster an environment where the students felt comfortable discussing, debating, and asking questions about the class material. Historical study can often seem abstract and disconnected from students' everyday lives. One of my main goals is also to demonstrate how both the facts and techniques of historical study can be of relevant use to students across their various life experiences. To do this, I often begin the recitation with a small review session of the week's material, connecting it to the broader themes of the class. After the review, I often ask probing questions that challenge students to think more deeply about the material, or that prompt them to respectfully debate each other's arguments.
Through grading hundreds of essays, midterms, and final exams, I've gained a great understanding of the areas where students succeed or fall behind in their studies and how they can be improved. Sometimes it is a misunderstanding of the course material; other times it is underdeveloped study habits or writing techniques. Regardless, I have worked with numerous students one-on-one to improve their performance in class. As a result of these meetings, I have been overjoyed to watch students enhance their understanding and improve their grades on papers, tests, and ultimately, their course average. Whether you are in college, preparing for it, or returning to it, I would love to help you reach your academic goals!
