Bio

Hi, I'm Michael. I tutor in business, writing, AI and machine learning, and Spanish — and I bring 15+ years of real-world experience actually doing the things I help students learn.

My approach is conversational and practical. I ask a lot of questions before giving advice, because most students already know more than they think — they just need help organizing it.

I've taught and mentored for 15+ years, from weekly classes for students ages 11–18 in theater and choreography, to training interns and staff in professional settings, to tutoring adults, college students, and high schoolers one-on-one.

I hold a Master's in Performing Arts Administration from NYU Steinhardt and a BS in Business Marketing from BYU's Marriott School. After grad school, I worked at Lincoln Center managing loyalty marketing across eleven programs and festivals. I later co-founded and ran a Los Angeles arts nonprofit for 7 years, scaling it to a $400K annual budget. Today I run a consulting practice and creative production studio in downtown LA, working daily with AI tools — building automation, designing workflows, integrating machine learning.

For AI and ML students, I teach concepts but also show how they get used in the real world. We can work coursework, or build something together — an agent, automation, a real prototype. I'm comfortable with foundational ML, modern LLM tooling, prompt engineering, and the broader question of how to use AI as a working tool rather than a magic box.

For Spanish, I focus on conversational fluency for travelers, professionals, and adult learners. I can work in either language depending on what helps.

For business and writing, I've written grant proposals, run budgets, and edited more cover letters and personal statements than I can count. I know what makes writing land and what makes a business plan credible. Based in LA, tutoring online.

Approved Subjects

Business

Business

I hold a BS in Business Management and Marketing from Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management, and I've spent fifteen years applying that training in the field. I've co-founded and run a Los Angeles arts nonprofit that scaled to a $400,000 annual budget, managed loyalty marketing operations at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and currently operate a consulting practice and a creative production studio in downtown LA. I tutor students in business fundamentals, marketing strategy, organizational operations, and small business management, drawing on actual case experience, not just textbook concepts. I work well with college students, MBA candidates, adult learners, and entrepreneurs preparing for real decisions in their own ventures.
Data Structures

Data Structures

I tutor in applied database design, relational data modeling, and systems architecture — the practical side of structuring data so it actually works for the people using it. My background is fifteen years of designing custom database systems for businesses and organizations, including a recent project that scraped, structured, and enriched a 200+ record dataset with an LLM-augmented pipeline. I'm strongest with relational data modeling (entities, relationships, normalization, lookup vs. linked records), no-code and low-code platforms like Airtable, and the architectural decisions that determine whether a system scales gracefully or collapses under its own weight. This is the right fit for working professionals, bootcamp students, and self-taught builders learning to design data systems for real applications — less suited to students working through traditional Computer Science Data Structures coursework, which is more academic algorithm-focused.
Marketing

Marketing

I hold a Bachelor's in Business Management and Marketing from Brigham Young University's Marriott School, and I've spent fifteen years applying that training across institutional, nonprofit, and small business contexts. At Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, I directed loyalty marketing operations across eleven programs and festivals, driving an 80% increase in earned email revenue and 25% year-over-year growth in engagement. I've since built marketing systems for arts organizations, creative studios, and small businesses—including digital strategy, audience development, email marketing, brand positioning, and content strategy. I tutor students in foundational marketing principles, applied marketing strategy, digital marketing, and the practical realities of building campaigns that actually drive results.
Project Management

Project Management

I've spent fifteen years running complex projects across institutional, nonprofit, and small business contexts — from large-scale marketing campaigns at Lincoln Center to scaling a Los Angeles arts nonprofit through multi-year growth, managing a $400,000 annual budget. Today I run a consulting practice focused specifically on operational design, project sequencing, and helping organizations move from chaos to executable plans. I tutor in project management fundamentals, methodology selection (waterfall vs. agile vs. hybrid), stakeholder communication, scope and budget management, and the practical realities of leading projects in resource-constrained environments. I work well with working professionals, MBA students, career-changers, and anyone preparing for PMP-adjacent certifications or facing a real project they need to deliver.
Spanish

Spanish

I’m completely fluent in Spanish. I lived in Paraguay for two years as a young adult through an immersion program, and I graduated from BYU with over 24 credits of Spanish earned by testing. My spouse is Salvadoran, and we speak Spanish at home daily. I’ve taught Spanish professionally in two intensive contexts: a year and a half teaching 8-week crash courses to college-aged students focused on rapid functional fluency, and a full year as a long-term substitute teacher at a dual-language immersion elementary school. Between those roles, I’ve taught hundreds of students across every level — from young children learning Spanish as a second language daily, to young adults who needed to be conversational in weeks, not semesters. My approach is conversational and practical. I can work in either Spanish or English depending on what helps you most, and I’m equally comfortable with test prep, grammar and vocabulary work, conversation practice, and helping learners build the confidence to actually use the language in real situations.
Theater

Theater

I tutor across the full landscape of theater work, with deep experience on both the business and performance sides. I hold a Master's in Performing Arts Administration from NYU Steinhardt and worked at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where I managed loyalty marketing across eleven programs and festivals. I'm equally comfortable coaching the producing side—budgeting, marketing, audience development, organizational structure, and the practical realities of running a theater company or independent production—and the performance side, drawing on my career as a working actor and performer. This is well-suited for theater students at the undergraduate or graduate level, working artists building independent productions, arts administrators, and adult learners pursuing theater seriously.
