My name is Sam and I'm a PhD candidate at the University of Southern California, studying urban planning. I hold a BA in history and German from the University of Minnesota, and I have more than three years' experience as a teaching assistant. At USC, I have led classrooms and worked with students on subjects like sociology, cartography, public policy research, and most recently, Japanese history. In addition to teaching, I have worked for nearly a decade in policy journalism as a reporter and editor, developing invaluable writing and communication skills I have successfully applied to the classroom.
I'm here because I'm passionate about teaching, and about finding new ways to understand the world around us--and about making that understanding as accessible and helpful as possible for students. To that end, I find it essential to develop lessons that meet students where they are, helping them feel empowered to direct their own learning toward their own goals. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, or to schedule a lesson!
