Hi! I’m Julia, a tutor with over 5 years of experience working with elementary and middle school students. I love helping kids become stronger readers and writers while also building the confidence they need to succeed in school.
I earned my B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with minors in Applied Psychology and Professional Writing. I’ve also completed High-Impact Tutoring Nanocourses through Arizona State University, focused on effective tutoring strategies and student engagement.
For the past 5 years, I’ve worked with students in grades K–8 in both one-on-one and small group online tutoring settings. Much of my work focuses on phonics and phonemics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. I also have experience tutoring math, history, and science!
A large part of my experience has been working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, students on the autism spectrum, and students with special needs. I’m very comfortable adapting lessons to meet different needs by breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual supports, building in short breaks, and incorporating students’ interests to keep them engaged.
Earlier in my tutoring career, I served as a tutoring coach with a nonprofit organization that provides free tutoring to students in under-resourced communities, where I helped support and mentor new tutors. I’ve also volunteered through CoachArt, mentoring and teaching young people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and helping create fun, supportive learning experiences.
My goal in every session is to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. When students feel supported and understood, they’re much more willing to take risks and grow as learners.
If you’re looking for a patient, encouraging tutor who enjoys working with kids and meeting them where they are, I’d be happy to help!
