Hi, I’m Nick!

I graduated with Highest Honors in 2007 from UC Berkeley, where I studied English and served as a tutor at the Student Learning Center. After that, I began formally teaching writing while earning my PhD in English from Cornell University (2014). I spent three years there teaching Freshman Writing Seminars, ultimately honing a teaching style that incorporated heavy one-on-one written and oral feedback. In other words, some of the most effective teaching I was doing was really, in fact, tutoring! I earned the Cornell English Department’s top teaching award in 2013.

Since then I’ve also taught a film workshop at UCLA Extension and creative and essay writing at Crossroads High School, and for the last three years I’ve been an Adjunct Professor in Cinema and Television Arts at California State University Northridge.

Meanwhile, for the last twelve years I also worked in the film and television industry. I started out as a Writers Assistant in television and also writing script coverage for a few companies (such as Stage 32), so I have been at every turn deeply steeped in the world of providing writing feedback! In 2019 I was promoted to a Staff Writer on an ABC sitcom (American Housewife), where I wrote for two years. I have also written two movies for television and an independent feature that is streaming on Apple, Amazon, and elsewhere.

In my current position I mostly teach film studies courses to large lecture halls, but my real pedagogical love is to work one-on-one with students to provide the kind of support and feedback they need to really challenge themselves to grow as a critical thinker. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to hear more or discuss!
