Dear Potential Students,
I'm not your average tutor. I am a polymath with wide-ranging interests that led me to Los Angeles. In high school, I was an award-winning math student, musician and public speaker. I competed statewide in all three topics, winning blue ribbons in math and public speaking (prose), and was a regional champion in saxophone. Accepted into Harvard, chose to pursue a career as a professional musician instead. Played bass guitar professionally for 10 years before transitioning to a paralegal and software engineer, eventually landing a contract law job with Warner Brothers. From there I transitioned into film production as a script supervisor, where I have worked for 26 years.
I have formally tutored middle school and junior high school students in math, history, and writing (creative and technical), etc. I've also taught office software (Word/Excel), guitar, bass guitar, piano, saxophone, music theory and various film crew crafts to children and adults. I am a Certified Microsoft Word Expert and in the mid-90s taught Word to over 30 law firms in downtown Los Angeles. I have also tutored beginner script supervisors into thriving union careers behind the camera on major motion pictures and TV shows.
My approach to tutoring is to get an honest assessment of where the student is in a particular subject, what their trouble spots are, and their long-term goals. Then we break down those goals into smaller, easily achievable steps that lead to where the student wants to go.
I find great personal fulfillment when a student has hit a wall with a subject but then has a breakthrough and suddenly understands what was holding them back. These types of accomplishment increase a child's sense of self-worth and are a profound part of their path forward into adulthood.
Now that my children are grown, I look forward to continuing my tutoring career here at Wyzant.
Fun Fact: I auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne in 1996. If you hire me, I'll tell you the story. It's funny.
