My name is Imani Musembi, and I am a graduate student at the University of Southern California (USC), pursuing a Master’s in Applied Data Science. I hold a B.S. in Computational Neuroscience from USC, with specializations in Applied Analytics and Web Development. From early on, I recognized the transformative power of education and have since dedicated myself to helping students navigate their own academic paths with confidence and curiosity.

For over nine years, I have worked as a tutor and instructor across multiple disciplines, including mathematics, coding, and STEM-related subjects. My experience spans one-on-one tutoring, classroom instruction, and virtual learning, working with students from elementary school through college. I have served as a Coding and Mathematics Instructor for Juni Learning, a Technology Instructor at Lavner Education, and a Coding Instructor for USC’s Joint Educational Project, where I introduced young learners to fundamental programming concepts. Beyond individual instruction, I have also designed and led educational programs as the Elementary School Programming Director for USC Troy Camp and Vice President of Operations for USC Science Outreach, where I developed hands-on science curricula to make STEM engaging and accessible for students from under-resourced communities.

My teaching philosophy centers on adaptability and engagement. I believe that learning should be interactive, approachable, and tailored to each student’s unique needs. Whether guiding students through complex problem-solving in math, introducing them to the logic of coding, or reinforcing foundational skills, I strive to make abstract concepts tangible and relatable. I also emphasize building confidence alongside academic growth, ensuring that students develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond tutoring sessions. Education has played a pivotal role in shaping my own journey, and I am passionate about paying that forward by fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning in others.

Approved Subjects

CSS

CSS

I hold a B.S. in Computational Neuroscience with specializations in Applied Analytics and Web Development. During my undergraduate studies, I completed courses in Front-End and Back-End Web Development, as well as UX/UI Design, where I gained extensive experience in CSS for responsive and visually appealing web design. As a Learning Instructor for the USC ITP Afghan Pathways program, I taught women in Afghanistan how to code and build websites from scratch, including styling with CSS. Currently, I tutor part-time in various coding subjects, including JavaScript and Intro to Web Development, with a strong focus on making technical concepts accessible and engaging. I am proficient in HTML, CSS (including Flexbox and Grid), JavaScript, PHP, and Figma.
JavaScript

JavaScript

I hold a B.S. in Computational Neuroscience with specializations in Applied Analytics and Web Development. During my undergraduate studies, I completed courses in Front-End and Back-End Web Development, as well as UX/UI Design, where I developed a strong foundation in JavaScript for interactive web applications. As a Learning Instructor for the USC ITP Afghan Pathways program, I taught women in Afghanistan how to code and build websites from scratch, incorporating JavaScript to enhance functionality. Currently, I tutor part-time in various coding subjects, including JavaScript and Intro to Web Development, focusing on making complex concepts accessible and engaging. As I pursue my M.S. in Applied Data Science, I continue to expand my expertise in JavaScript, particularly in working with JSON for data handling and integration. I am proficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, PHP, and Figma.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

As a current Math Instructor with Juni Learning, I am certified to teach Pre-Algebra A and B, as well as Algebra 1A/1B and upper elementary math courses focused on foundational skills in multiplication, fractions, decimals, and geometry. Academically, I hold a B.S. in Computational Neuroscience with specializations in Applied Analytics and Web Development, and I am currently pursuing an M.S. in Applied Data Science. I excelled in advanced mathematics throughout my academic career, completing coursework through Calculus III and Linear Algebra. With over nine years of experience teaching math, science, and computer programming, I specialize in breaking down complex concepts into digestible, engaging lessons tailored to each student’s unique learning style. Whether a student is just beginning to explore algebraic thinking or needs targeted support with pre-algebra topics, I create a supportive and student-centered environment that builds confidence and mastery.
Probability

Probability

During my undergraduate studies, I earned a B.S. in Computational Neuroscience with specializations in Applied Analytics and Web Development, excelling in courses such as Statistics and Mathematics for Engineering and Physics. Currently, I am pursuing an M.S. in Applied Data Science, where I have successfully completed coursework that provides a strong foundation in probability, including Data Science at Scale, Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science, Foundations of Data Management, and Machine Learning for Data Science. My academic background, combined with my experience in data-driven analysis, equips me with the skills necessary to effectively tutor students in probability.
Python

Python

I am a current MS student studying Applied Data Science with a background in Computational Neuroscience (where I specialized in Applied Analytics and Web Development). I have a wide range of experiences teaching computational concepts, especially Python, to a diverse set of age groups. I am a current tutor with Juni Learning where I teach Python Levels 1-3, as well as Python in Data Science to middle and high school students. I also serve as the AI Fundamentals Instructor for NOVA Scholar Education where I teach middle school students about core AI principles. Furthermore, I previously served as a JEP Coding Instructor where I taught Python concepts to middle school students in the LA area. Additionally, my computational experience extends beyond just teaching concepts and often ventures into real world applications. I am currently the Director of Research & Education for ARCH Collaborative where I lead the research team in implementing Python to analyze patient data related to chronic pain and public transportation access. I've also served as a Lead Data Analyst for Biokind Analytics, where I've used Python to analyze datasets and create data visualizations in order to to provide strategic recommendations to nonprofit organizations. Overall, I possess a wide range of expertise related to Python and its applications both in and out of the classroom.
Spanish

Spanish

I have over seven years of experience learning Spanish and excelled in my high school Spanish courses, including IB Spanish as well as AP Spanish, earning a 5 on the AP Spanish Exam. During college, I applied my Spanish skills to translate science curriculum materials for my student organization and to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking parents of the children we worked with. My experience allows me to support students in mastering Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and conversation skills in both academic and real-world settings.
