I was valedictorian of my graduating high school class. I attended UC San Diego and obtained a bachelor’s degree with a major in neurobiology and minor in psychology. I have never officially tutored anyone before, however in the past I have helped my little sister consistently with high school and middle school homework since she was 13. As such, my experience is limited. That being said, I would consider myself knowledgeable in a variety of subjects including biology, chemistry, psychology, history, political science, and Spanish. In high school I took and passed 7 AP classes.
Approaches I took while helping my sister included simplifying terms, going through a step-by-step process when doing mathematical problems, explaining aspects piece by piece, and using flashcards to help with memorization. I would ask her what she knows beforehand in order to know what other information she needs. I also made sure my sister used critical thinking skills to work towards the answer. Of course, I believe my tutoring techniques will improve as I gain more experience with others. For people to tutor I would consider people in high school and middle school or people taking general education requirements classes in college.
