Hi! I'm a middle/high school math and SAT Math tutor based in Westchester Los Angeles. I have 15 years of experience tutoring students one on one, and what students like the most about me is my ability to take complex ideas and simplify them into steps that are easier to understand. I was also a summer camp counselor (I taught sailing) so I know how to make lessons fun! I help identify key areas where a student is struggling and work through those areas with them -- and sometimes it's just that little extra motivation that can get a student those few additional points needed on the exam.

I scored a 780 on the SAT Math, a 790 on the SAT II Math, and I had a 4.0 GPA in my math minor from the University of Pennsylvania (Class of 2014). However, what really makes me stand out is not my academic achievement, but my ability to understand how a student learns best and teach to that ability.

I'm based in Westchester and can travel to your home or a local library/coffee shop in west LA. Looking forward to meeting you soon!

Chess

I started playing chess in 3rd grade and absolutely loved it! I played in many regional and state tournaments, consistently placing in the top 10 in my state age group (1500-1600 rating). Alas, I did not go on to become a master, but I do still love teaching students how to play. I focus on themes -- controlling the center, keeping your king safe, developing pieces, etc -- and less on rote memorization of moves, something many beginners fall into the trap of when trying to improve their skills. In my lessons I can review previous games (we can teach tournament notation if that's something we need to learn), and I also set up "mini-games," or small challenges that students love to play and engage with. Message me if you want to learn more! David P.S. I'm also an SAT Math Tutor if your student wants to work on that too :)
